~Day 17~

Thump.

Thump.

Glenn and Rebecca were dead quiet in their living room as they heard growls outside of their apartment. Over the course of seventeen days, the people that were in the refugee camps had turned into the dead.

They knew that some of the dead were in their apartment building as they kept hearing growls throughout the night. Rebecca's eyes never left her door.

Her dad was supposed to be here two days after she made the phone call to him, yet, he still hasn't arrived. Glenn kept reassuring her that they probably couldn't get into the city now that it was overrun by the dead which didn't make her feel better.

Rebecca's eyes shifted from the door over to the windows as she saw that the city of Atlanta was still lit up in the dark.

Suddenly, a strange noise could be heard from miles away. Rebecca sent a questioning look over to Glenn who in return did the same.

As they stood up, they both immediately fell back down to the ground as the entire apartment building shook.

Picture frames that hung on the shelves fell and Rebecca immediately covered her head, feeling the hard frames hitting her while Glenn shielded himself by crawling underneath the coffee table.

The shaking had finally stopped as Rebecca slowly opened her eyes and looked out the windows. She covered her mouth in shock as she saw that the tall buildings were on fire. She quickly stood up, ignoring the pain in her arm as she ran over to the windows.

Glenn crawled out from under the coffee table and immediately joined Rebecca's side. He stared out into the city as he ran his hands through his hair.

The refugee center, several buildings, tress and cars were on fire. Glenn and Rebecca watched in horror as a power line began wobbling.

"Glenn-"

"It's not going to fall...we'll be okay."

But Glenn was wrong as the power line toppled over. The power lines' wires snapping on impact as it hit the ground, blackening the entire city of Atlanta.

"Grab the flashlights." Rebecca ordered before walking away but Glenn stopped her by grabbing her wrist. "You're bleeding," Rebecca looked down and gave a disgusted look at her arm. "I need to take the glass out of your arm." Rebecca sighed, "Grab the flashlights first."

Glenn let go of her arm as she ran to her bedroom while he ran into their kitchen. He opened a cabinet and pulled out a flashlight. He turned one on as soon as Rebecca walked into the kitchen with her flashlight.

"Now what do we do?" Glenn asked. "We have to get out of here. We'll leave first thing in the morning. We have to start packing." "Becca," Glenn said stopping her once again.

"What?"

He shined his flashlight onto her bloody arm.  Rebecca sighed in frustration. "We need to take care of your arm first before we pack," Glenn said before going into the bathroom. He came back with the first aid kit.

Rebecca sat down at the table as Glenn sat down next to her. He pulled out a pair of tweezers and carefully pulled out the tiny bits of glass that were embedded in Rebecca's arm. He then applied ointment to prevent an infection from happening before wrapping a bandage around the wound.

"Thank you," she whispered

"Thank you," she whispered.

"No problem, Becca."

Rebecca stood up and went to her bedroom to pack as Glenn did the same. Rebecca surveyed her room before pulling out a backpack. She stuffed some clothes into her bag.

Next, she knelt down onto the floor and pulled out her crossbow from underneath her bed. Hiking up her bag on her shoulder, she walked out of her room and back into the kitchen. She placed her backpack and crossbow onto the table just as Glenn walked in with his own backpack.

He began sorting the can foods and bottles of waters into his backpack while Rebecca grabbed the first aid kit and placed it into her bag. The two silently continued to pack their bags up. Rebecca zipped up her bag and paused as she remembered the gun her father gave her when she first moved to the city.

She walked over to her safe, dialed the code and opened it. There, laid the handgun and the bullets. She grabbed the bullets and loaded them into the gun.

She came back into the kitchen and turned the safety on the gun before placing it down onto the counter top. Glenn stared at the handgun.

He knew how to use it since Rebecca's father, Ben, taught him back at their hometown. Ben was a hunter and when he learned that Rebecca and Glenn would be moving to Atlanta to attend college together, he made sure he taught Glenn how to use a gun in case something bad ever happened to him or Rebecca.

Glenn looked up at Rebecca who was staring down at the gun, deep in thought. "Hey," he softly said, breaking her out of her train of thought. "We're in this together."

Rebecca nodded. "We're in this together."

~Day 18~

The sun rays gleamed through the window and into Glenn and Rebecca's apartment, signaling them the start of a new day.

Glenn and Rebecca put on their backpacks and grabbed their weapons before making their way towards the door. Glenn placed his hand on the doorknob but paused as he and Rebecca took one last look at the place they had called home for years.

"Are you ready?" Glenn asked Rebecca who let out a deep breath. "Ready as I'll ever be." She looked up at Glenn. "We go on my count. Ready?" Glenn nodded.

"One...two...three!"

Glenn opened the door just as Rebecca raised her crossbow up. She stepped out into the hallway with her crossbow up while Glenn closed the door behind him.

He froze when he heard a growl. He turned around and was back to back with Rebecca. The growl had come from their next door neighbor, Mr. Martin.

Expect that Mr. Martin didn't look like himself. His skin had been chewed away, exposing his bones underneath. His right hand was also mangled.

Rebecca shot an arrow at him and it landed in his stomach. She expected him to go down but he was still moving toward her.

Rebecca quickly loaded the second arrow into her crossbow while Glenn turned around and fired a shot at Mr. Martin. The bullet hit his shoulder but he still made his way towards the two.

"Why isn't he dead yet?" Glenn cried out. "I don't know!" Rebecca yelled as she aimed her crossbow at Mr. Martin once again and fired another arrow at him. This time, the arrow struck his head and he went down.

Rebecca stared in shock. "The brain," she mumbled. "What?" Glenn asked as he looked over at Rebecca as she bent down and pulled out the two arrows that were stuck in Mr. Martin.

She wiped the blood off the arrows onto Mr. Martin's shirt. She stood up and looked at Glenn. "It's gotta be the brain. That seems to be what kills these..." she trailed off, trying to find a name for the dead.

"Geeks?"

Rebecca huffed. "Geeks? Is that what we're really calling them?" Glenn shrugged his shoulders. "Unless you have a better name for the dead." Rebecca shook her head.

"Come on; let's get out of here before more show up." Glenn said as the two made their way out of the apartment building, expecting the outside world not to be disastrous.

But they were wrong once again.
