Paper Hearts
Annie was still chasing Brody,
but she'd gained an invite to the wedding.
She tried to persuade Brody to be her escort,
but he tried slithering out with tricks of all sorts.
He left her with Will Barter and hinted that he
might have the pleasure of escorting Annie.
Annie tried to back out, but Will was insistent,
So she had to do something to fix it.
"I wrote the article that ruined your chances.
Do you still want to take me to the wedding and dances?"
That cooled Will off and wiped away his grin.
"You...the reporter who did all that slanderin'?"
She nodded, and he shook his head.
"You'll have to find someone else instead."
He was off, and Annie was free,
so she ran away to find Brody.
He stole a page from her book;
Her carefully sharpened pencil he took.
He drew on the paper and then let her look.
"You hold my heart now, Annie,
but it's as fragile as that paper sheet.
Handle it with care," he simply said.
"Oh, Brody!" Annie tearfully shook her head.
"This is my heart, too; don't you see?"
She handed back the paper gently.
Brody put the paper close to his heart;
he and Annie were off to a good start.
Until...
Annie let it slip that Lou was going away,
and that she'd bailed out Bruce earlier that day.
Brody thought she and Shamus were working as one
to keep him away and steal Lou's teaberry fortune.
She denied it, but he still was suspicious;
and left to get the truth from Shamus.
