Buck & Blink
After the joyous news of the soon to be wed -
Miss Myna 'n her Lorne - there were plans to be made.
Midst the swirl of lemony, confectioners delight,
And talk of gowns with colorful ribbons in riot,
CG asked Dixie to help with the flowers.
Noth'n would do but that the Queen of sweet treats
Should carry the rose so rare and so secret!
And so, to send Buck 'n Blink,
Dixie did strongly propose,
in search of the
Shy 'n reclusive Elusive Rose.
Hugh set the em up with Ol' Cat packed for travel.
"Blink... listen to me boy.... You know the flowers...but Buck knows his way.
Don't fight him... keep your temper at bay. "
"Uncle Hugh, I don't know these folks, I don't even wanta stay!.. What's so special bout an ol' broke down lawman and his muffin make'n ol' lady?"
Hugh looked tired 'n sad, as he held the reins while his nephew took the mount.
The man looked up at this boy he loved "Sometimes it's honor that counts. When you denigrate good folks by talk'n em down, you don't tarnish them... you just sound like a clown."
Buck rode up fast
"Good morn'n you two!... look at this!". he held up two large burlap bags...
"AJ decided to send a little food!"
"OK, Buck!...Think you're ready to go... hope it doesn't take more than a night or two!"
Laugh'n, (even the boy in spite of himself)... the three men said their goodbyes, and waved at little Nod, who was wave'n from her window and holler'n out "Yoohoo!"
"Come on, Blink, keep up the pace!"
"Don't you fret bout me, this ain't no dang race!"
Hugh 'n Nod watched as the two men disappeared down the trace......
and both hoped they'd be safe.
As the men made camp...
Blink hobbled the horses and anchored ol'Cat.
As he filled their feed sacks, he felt Buck stare'n at his back.
He turned and glared at Buck
"Stop stare'n at me! This wasn't my druther!
Uncle Hugh says I should get to know you... says you've got a good head on your shoulders. "
Buck's eyes flared, "Don't you talk to me like that, boy!
You're lucky to have a man like that in your corner!
He's helped me see that I can try for a future."
Blink spun around...
"What future do you have in this dusty ol' hole!
All that's here is hard work and horse shoes!
Why do you stay? Tell the truth!"
Buck didn't hesitate...
"I'm here for Lou."

The next morn'n, Buck woke with the sun.
He shivered in the first-dawn chill and noticed the night fire had died clean down.
Ol' Cat was gone, with most of the food.
A note was attached to a couple of muffins.
"You'll find the rose bed right behind you... between the Sequoyah and the burial ground. "
