"This is amazing to watch," Katara sounded happy.
"Kind of makes you realize how insignificant we are," Sokka said.
"A mere speck in the cosmos," Muteki philosophied.
"Eh, you've seen nothing once," Toph sounded bored. "You've seen it 1,000 times."
"Come, join us," Jin looked in my direction. "It's so beautiful."
"Oh, man," Sokka got excited all of a sudden. "You've never not-seen anything like this. Come on, Mog."
"I'm going to sleep," I was already lying in my sleeping bag. "Wake me when we leave."
"You aren't tired," Muteki hollered down from the shelter's roof. "You're still pissy."
"So what?" I rolled over.
"So build a bridge!" he called down.
"I'd rather drown."
"I'm sure he could make that happen," Jin was suddenly at my side.
"I don't wanna."
"Come up here and inflict yourself on the rest of us," Muteki grinned over the edge.
A stone poked me in the side. I didn't even flinch. No way I was giving him the satisfaction.
"Guys!" Sokka called. "You're missing it!"
"Missing what?" Toph asked.
"That rock is on fire!" Muteki cheered. "Mangetsu, check it out!"
I frowned deeply as Muteki called out to... that brat.
"Dude, he's so out of it, I don't think he can even hear you," Jin chuckled.
"I want whatever he's eating because that kind of zonked out is legitimately amazing," Muteki laughed, turning his attention back on me. "Hey-"
There was a loud crash that shook the ground.
"Woah!" Toph cried.
"The hell was that?" Mangetsu's voice came, sounding slightly dopey.
I ignored him. And I ignored everyone else. But mainly, I ignored the brat. However, that meant I had to roll over to show him my back. During which, I saw what everyone was gawking at.
A meteorite had landed stupidly close to the village we had camped near. The smoke was rising from an orange glow in the mountainside. Everyone else shared a nervous look.
"The fire is gonna destroy that town," Katara said nervously.
"Not if we can stop it," Aang sounded resolute.
"Alright, let's go, everybody!" Jin called as everyone began piling onto Appa.
"That means you too," Muteki said, grabbing my shirt and pulling me up off the ground.
"Get off!" I snapped, trying to struggle free.
"Enough, Mog," Muteki said firmly. "For the next hour or so, leave it be. There's a wildfire that needs to be dealt with, and we don't have time for pettiness."
I pulled myself free, scowling as I straightened my shirt.
"Fine," I growled. "But only cause I have to."
We all mounted up on Appa, and I made sure the brat was as far away from me as possible. By the time we got to the fire, it was already raging pretty badly.
"There's a creek over there," Katara pointed said creek out. "Mangetsu and I can bend the water on the fire."
She cracked Appa's reins, the two of them taking off towards the creek, once the rest of us had been deposited before the flames, at the edge of the enormous crater.
"Toph, Muteki, let's make a trench to keep the fire from coming any closer," Aang said. "Mogui, you and Jin see if you can't firebend some of the fire down."
"Got it," Jin said.
"Yeah, make the fire frosty," I commented off-handed.
"You know it," Jin threw me a wink and took up her firebending stance.
"What... should I do?" Sokka asked dejectedly.
"Keep an eye on Momo," Aang said casually as Momo plopped onto Sokka's head.
"So, what, I'm just a lemur-sitter?" Sokka questioned, petting Momo. "There, there. Feel better?"
"Sorry, buddy," I said, reaching out for the flames. "Maybe next time."
My eyes were closed as I worked on the flames. I felt the fire rather than saw it, almost like how Toph could see through Earthbending. I reached out with my mind as my arms went through the motions, pulling the fire down. The heat faded from a blaze to a steady tingling sensation.
"I can dampen the fire," I called out. "But it refuses to die!"
"Just keep it down," Toph called back as she and Muteki rolled a slab of rock over the blaze.
"Sokka, stand clear," Aang yelled.
"Right," the boy grumbled. "Stand clear. Got it."
Sokka picked up Momo and began to walk away. But not quick enough as Aang received a huge ball of water from Katara and the brat. He took a deep breath before pushing his arms forward, throwing the water at the fire and exhaling a gust of wind. It was pretty epic. Even I had to smile at that.
Cue Sokka being caught by surprise by the torrent of water. Appa, the brat, and Katara landed nearby, and Toph walked up to the group. Yes, I was smiling. Yes, I had enjoyed myself. Yes, I still hated the brat's intolerable guts.
"Good work, everybody," Aang grinned.
I looked over to see Sokka sitting in a pile of snow. Or was it ash? White powder... Cocaine?
