"Mom, it was awesome! You shoulda seen Melissa!" Daniel said.
"What happened? Are you ok Daniel?"
"These bullies were chasing me all the way home from school, I found Melissa in here. She was this close to fighting them. She smashed a glass bottle-"
"There's broken glass in the floor!"
"Yes Ms. Martin. I'm very sorry. I'll clean it up."
"Thank you Melissa. Daniel, you can go start your homework now."
"Ok Mom."
Daniel left the bar.
"First, you bring a knife to school and now a broken beer bottle in my hotel! I have a feeling you're gonna end up in prison someday!
"No Ms. Martin, I'm not gonna go to prison, I promise you that. Cross my heart and hope to die."
"Ok, I understand you were protecting my son against those guys and I appreciate that but violence isn't the answer. Next time something like this happens, just come to me or your Uncle Simon, I'll tell Daniel the same as soon as I leave this room. Just say to leave him alone. You understand?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Ok, clean this up and get back to work because dinner hours is starting soon."
She left Melissa to clean. Then, Rose walked in.
"What happened here?"
"Hi Rose, Daniel was chased by bullies all the way home from school and I protected him with a broken glass bottle."
"You go girl!"
Rose helped her out.
"I remember when I was in school, I was picked on for being fat by a group of popular snobby skinny girls. I didn't let them mess with me. I was told to tell a friend or a trusted adult. I told my reading teacher next time it happened. They left me alone ever since. Proof that violence sometimes, is not the answer."
"Thanks Rose."
"Don't mention it, only use violence when it's absolutely necessary. Bully them back!"
"Thank you Rose."
She nodded and they walked out the bar.
Hadley and Simon were in the lobby.
"Simon, you'll never guess what your niece did?"
"What'd she do now?"
"She had her first bar fight."
"Oh God!?" Simon said as he buried his face in his hands.
"She wasn't drinking or anything. She happened to be in the bar at the time of the incident."
"What happened?"
"Daniel was being chased by bullies all the way home from school. He ran to her for protection and she did exactly that but with a half broken beer bottle."
"Ah," Simon nodded.
"She has a soft spot for him...you do too, come on, admit it!"
"Yes, I love both your kids."
"Awww!"
She laid her head on his shoulder.
"I love your niece like my own daughter. Melissa's a tough one that's for sure but a great kid!"
"Yes, I know Melissa Ferguson."
