The next day, Vincent came downstairs with a bellboy behind him. Rose was at the desk.
"Well, if it isn't the deadbeat."
"Hi Rose."
"What's with the bags? You and Melissa going to the Plaza like you promised?"
"No, I'm checking out without her."
Rose frowned. Simon was eavesdropping.
"You're leaving her again?"
"Not like when she was a baby. Something else came up, I'm sorry."
"You're lying, I know you are! Aren't you?"
"I'm sorry."
Vincent walked away.
"If you leave, you never come back, you scoundrel!"
Simon walked in.
"He left again. That deadbeat, good-for-nothing retard!"
Melissa walked downstairs all ready to go.
"I'm ready to go! Dad? Uncle Simon, where's Dad?"
Simon looked at her sadly. Rose spoke for him.
"Melissa, he checked out."
"Without me?"
Rose nodded.
"We were supposed to spend time together."
"I know honey."
Hadley came in with Yorgo.
"What's going on?"
"Aren't you supposed to be with your dad?"
Simon turned to them.
"He left...again."
"Oh my god!" Hadley said.
"Guys, you know what? It's ok. It's ok!" Melissa said calmly.
Melissa tried to hold her anger in.
"Melissa, it's ok to be mad. I'm seeing red right now!"
"I'm not mad."
She was breathing heavily. After a few seconds, she flipped the coffee table over. It didn't have nothing but a magazine or two, it was light.
"You are mad!"
"No I'm not! I'm better off without him, ok. I grew up without him and I turned out great, just bleedin' great. I feel fine."
"It's ok to cry darling," Simon reassured her.
"I know Uncle Simon. At least you're not a deadbeat. You make a better parent than bleedin' Vincent! You and Mum were the ones who taught me how to ride a bike, swim, shave my legs, how to whittle with a pocket knife. You know, you sure as hell make a better parent than he! Vincent Harris can die a horrible death for all I care!"
Then Melissa screamed at the door.
"DIE!"
Melissa was breathing heavily, then broke down.
"Why!? Why did my dad leave me!? Why did Mum have to die!?"
Simon ran to her and gave her a big hug. The rest of them stared in sadness.
