Chapter Forty-Eight
(Kismet)
White walls, beeping noises, the smell of cleanness reminds Namjoon the day of his father's death. His face is on his hands, bags so big they display the lack of sleep he hasn't had in days.
Last night he had gotten the call from his mother that his Nana had suffered a pain so bad that they had to take her to the hospital.
Without any further questions, he kissed Ye-Jun on the forehead, left a note for him in the restroom-since that would be the first place he would look after waking up- and sped up to the hospital.
When he got there, his mother was on one of the waiting chairs, her thumb and index finger place on top of her temples. Silently, he had sat next to her, unable to say anything else.
What felt like an eternity, finally they called them up to her room, just having come back from taking tests. She was peacefully sleeping, her mouth covered by a breathing tube.
That sight brought an immense pain to Namjoon, breaking his entire body emotionally. His nana had always been strong, caring, nurturing, selfless: she had been a second mother to him.
Months ago he had lost his father, and although they had beef for the longest time, it still hurt to lose him. For the longest time, he was in a grey area, a place where he was stuck doing what his father wanted him to do, now he feels the same thing. His father death somehow gave him freedom. But now everything going around him is no freedom at all; his father is gone, so is everything he came to know.
His Nana wheezes, the sound sharp and loud. She doesn't stir, only her lungs moving up and down. The doctors aren't here yet and that scares him. He has no idea what's going on. He knows that she has problems with her lungs and that she takes medicine, out side of that knowledge about her health, he knows nothing.
Is she dying? That questions keeps repeating on his head. With everything going on, the least that the universe can do to him at this moment is to leave his Nana alone. Heartbreak after Heartbreak only leads to misery.
Two days ago he had found out from Hoseok's friend, Aliyah, that Jeb is being payed to say that he knows what happened between Taehyung and Hoseok. She says that she has proof of it, but Namjoon doesn't have a clue of what the proof is. She told him he'll know once she sends it to him in a few days.
Finally they have something against Seokjin's mother. More and more clues show up. Now that he knows Minseu is the one helping Seokjin's mother, he will need proof to show the court. One way or another he will find the clue before the next court date.
Too much on his mind that Namjoon almost doesn't hear the doctor come in. His mother is up from her position before he has the time to register his presence in the room.
"Mrs. Kim, hi, I'm Doctor Clark. I'm a Pulmonologist and I'm here to help Mrs. Yoo." Doctor Clark shakes hands with Namjoon's mother and then his, turning his direction back to his mother once he nods at him.
"Mrs. Yoo's lungs are filled with Mucus that are preventing her lungs from bringing oxygen out of her body. From the charts I see that she has COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease."
"Yes. She has had this disease for a couple of years now. She's been taking medicine to help her lungs breath. I don't understand why she's in pain now?" Namjoon's mother begins to speak, her eyes tired and her face scared.
"We did a blood test and spirometry and her lungs have lost alveoli due to inflammation as well as the production of excessive mucus. Because of this she has a problem with breathing and medicine just won't help her at this point," Doctor Clark says, exactly how a Doctor would tell the family when the chances of surviving a minimal.
