Chapter Sixty- Eight
(Kismet)
When the crying moans of his mother began to fill the room, becoming louder and louder, Seokjin realized his mother was finally awake. His head had been resting by her hand, his hands besides his lap, heavily hanging on the air. Immediately his head snapped, calling her name in a desperate whisper.
"My children, Earl, " she moans, reaching for any hand that was in proximity to her. Seokjin took her hand and came closer to her so that she could see his face better.
"Your children are here, " Earl responds, his body still in the same exact position on the armchair a few hours ago.
"Mother, " Seokjin says, his eyes puffy and his nose stuffed from all the crying. The waterworks began to work its way up again, and Seokjin lets them. There was no point in keeping in his tears. He was mourning her, even if she was still here in the present, her hand on his.
"Seokjin, " she croaks, tightening his hand, while her eyelids rapidly flutter, her mouth creasing into a smile. "My baby, I'm so glad you're here. Where are your brothers?"
"They're here. We're all here, " Seokjin responds, his eyes locking with Jungkook who was behind the chair Taehyung was currently sitting at. His arms were around Taehyung's neck and as Seokjin suppress his sobs, Jungkook thinly smiles at him.
"Hi, mom, " Jungkook says, his lip quivering, his hands tightening onTaehyung's shoulders. At the sound of Jungkook's voice, Taehyung breaks down, his cries alerting their mother. She begs to be sat up so she can see her children.
She heaves as she's placed behind two pillows, her eyes closing several times. Seokjin whimpers as he sees her struggle. Standing next to her is painful to watch and to hear. She had been under medication for so long that having her vivid and talking brought mixed feelings, and the more he got attached to the idea of wanting her here, the harder was for him to see her alive just to wait for her last dying breath.
"Does it hurt?" Seokjin asks, internally facepalming himself for asking such an obvious question. However, he didn't how to begin a conversation when they all knew the impending subject of their gathering.
"The worst pain I had ever felt. Even breathing feels like a struggle, " their mother responds, her eyes still close.
Seokjin nods even though she can't see him. His hand is still on hers and the touch of her skin on his causes something in him to want to burst out and showcase what he's really feeling inside.
"Why are we stalling? Let's get to the chase: mom is not even dead yet, but we're acting as if her death is scheduled already. Why aren't you fighting harder?" Jungkook's last question is directed toward their mother, and the anger and vulnerability that comes along with his voice frighten Seokjin. It wasn't as much as a question as it was a direct command.
"I am trying. I want to be with you guys so much and it hurts that I caused so much heartbreak in your lives."
"If you were trying to survive, you would've not written a will, " Jungkook raises his voice, the letter clutched in his hand, a frown plastered on his face.
After Namjoon had read the letter and left them alone, Jungkook pleaded for the letter, shoving it inside his pants, his countenance dark and unreadable.
"My future, our future is never certain, and as much as it hurt me to write it, I didn't want to leave you guys without having addressed what I had done and the repentance that followed it. I don't want to make any more mistakes and have you guys wondered why I did them without an explanation, " their mother slowly explains, her voice breaking, eyes far away and distant.
