She felt her heart skip one beat whe sh efelt his warm breath hitting her neck while he untied the skarf around her eyes. His guitar player fingers moved carefully and then he took away the fabric. "Ok...open your eyes" he whispered and even dared to lean his chest a little against her back.
She leaned a little against him when she slowely opened her eyes.
Her breath stopped when she saw where he took her, and even those strange sounds made sense now.
She was right, the climate wa tropical, everywhere in the conservatory where some small lanterns in the art nouveau style that spent some warm lights between all those huge foreign and tropical green plants and flowers.
It was a pretty huge greenhouse with some paths to go. It looked like it was built around 1890. The large windows that built the house and the metal poles that connected those were really like she loved it.
But it was not the beautiful old building that got her attention, it were the hundred of small and big wings that swirled around the air and even in front of her: butterflies.
The whole place was full of them. Big exotic looking ones, smaller ones or those you can find on normal fields.
Ruby couldn't suppress her massive smile and turned around to Alex on whose shoulder one blue butterfly has landed. She smiled bright at him and made his heart actually jump with the smile she was giving him.
"Good surprise?" he asked while he tried to get the butterfly on his indexfinger.
"Perfect surprise!"
"Don't think I'm some romantic wimp? 'Cause that's what some friend told me about my idea" he said with a quiet laugh. Indeed Jamie had called him that, but it was a joke and Jamie was actually pretty optimistic and even proud about Alex' idea.
She returned this smile and noded "Yeah I actually got that by now...but you know what...that makes me just the same romantic wimp...I love it here!!" she said happy and looked around and then into his eyes.
He was reliefed that she reacted to the butterflyhouse like that.
"Are you hungry?" he asked
"Thought you would never ask!" she replied with a huge grin.
"great..just around the corner"
They walked down the first path while the butterflies kind of nearly followed them.
In front of them was like a small lake installed with a small footbridge over it.
On that bridge there really stood a picknickbasket with a blanket next to it.
He looked at her face, fearing it could be too much cheesy stuff for one evening, but she had this look again in her face that she had when she opened her eyes. He couldn't actually believe that he found a woman who was tough, smart and actually enjoying all this romantic stuff that he secretly really liked.
"do't you want to guide me to our dinnerplace, Alexander?"
He made a gentleman like gesture and lifted his imaginary hat and hold out his arm for her
"M'i Lady" he said smiling as she put her hand on his arm for him to lead her to the small bridge around which also some butterflies flew of course.
He put the blanket over the wooden bridge and both sat down.
She sat cross-legged and watched him how he opened the picknicbasket.
"Ok I have to admit I can't cook at all and it's no five star dinner its only.."
"Shut up! Do you really think I need some snob-food?" she said smiling
He put out a box of food in front of her, she opened it and smiled.
It was a mixed box of italian antipasti.
"I hope you-"
"- It's perfect! I love italian food!" was her simple answer.
"Great! And we can even keep our clothes on this time" Alex teased smiling and earned a quiet laugh as reply.
He seemed self confident and happy during their 'dinner' which contained the antipasti, beer and even a box of chocolate pralinées.
The mix of it, how he must have planned it actually let some ice around her heart that was still there melt in the matter of seconds.
He defenitely fulfilled his task of surprising her completely.
After they had finished eating and enjoyed the chocolate some butterflies somehow decided that Ruby was actually pretty good spot to land on and spend some time which gave Alex the perfect opportunity to take some pictures of her. She did not even protest and simply sat still so they would not fly away again. It was simply a beautiful scene that both were in. Utterly romantic and sugary but just so incredibly beautiful.
They layd next to each other on the blanket in silence, Ruby was looking at the glass ceiling over them and the butterflies who flew around in the air without effort while Alex was watching her. She slowely turned her head into his direction and cought his dreamy look which he was giving her.
"What are you thinking of Alexander?" she wispered, her voice sounding serious and he could feel some certain sound of sadness in it. It was more like a sadness that allways surrounded her, something dark, that also defined her character. She seemed vulnurable in this moment. He did not see her like that during the hours they've spent so far and was surprised about the way she asked him. She was so calm but she allways sensed out the feeling that a thunderstorm was getting on in her head and mind. He wanted to discover her, her secrets, her mysteries, her darkness and her light.
He smiled at her and simply told her the truth which conjured a special smile on her face.
"I thought that you are beautiful" was his whispered answer.
