The thing I loved the most right now, was when Emma and I would cuddle on her couch. It felt like she belonged in my arms and we belonged together.
She was softly giggling as I would occasionally nuzzle my nose against her cheek. My heart would flutter every time she would look over at me with a smile on her face.
I didn't even know what we were watching on tv, because my only focus was on her.
"You're amazing, Dakota." Emma said as she laid her head underneath my neck.
Hearing her say that meant a lot to me since we really haven't spent much time together yet, and we weren't even official.
I held her tighter as my eyes shifted over towards the tv. As a few moments had went by, I heard the front door shut and Emma had moved from my embrace.
I looked over towards the entrance of the living room and saw Emily walking in. She stopped a few feet away from the couch and looked over at me then at Emma.
"Why is she always here?" She looked back at me.
Emma stared up at her. "Go upstairs, Emily."
Emily looked from her mom back to me before rolling her eyes and leaving the living room. After she had left, Emma leaned back against the couch and looked towards the tv.
I have noticed that every time Emily comes around, Emma doesn't act like herself anymore. She's a little distant from me even though we were cuddling not even five minutes ago.
I scooted over towards her and looked at her. "Are you ok?" I wrapped my arm around her but she quickly got up.
I watched as she left the living room and I soon got up to follow her into the kitchen. She walked over to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of water before turning around to face me.
I leaned against the counter as I was watching her take a few sips. As soon as she sat the water down, we made eye contact. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
There's the number one lie everyone tells.
I stared at her. "There is. You act weird every time your daughter is around."
"I just feel like it's weird for you when she's around."
I gave her a look. "I told you that it didn't bother me. You're the one acting strange." She grabbed her water then walked out and I was right behind her as we went back to the living room. "Talk to me, Emma."
She sat down and I sat with her as I was watching her. "I just don't want you to have to deal with what I deal with." She looked over at me.
"What do you deal with?" I asked.
She looked down for a moment then looked back at me. "I told you that I didn't want you to get hurt." I nod as I watched her. "My life isn't exactly normal."
"Tell me, Emma. I want to know."
She stared at me for a moment. "I honestly don't know what is wrong with Emily. She has problems and I can't get her to listen to me. She goes out and does whatever she wants, while I sit here and worry about her." She took a sip of water. "I tried to talk to Paul about it but all he wants to do is fight and tell me that I'm a terrible mother and I can't handle my own child."
"Have you tried talking to her?" I asked a stupid question.
She looked at me. "Of course, but she will not listen. She runs over me and I can't do anything about it. I don't even know what she does, and it has be worrying all the time."
