i've always said that
no matter what,
i'll be happy for you
and i'll be okay with anything you say
so tell me,
why do i feel so sad right now?

"Yo, Jasper, can we talk?" Toad asked, leaning against the door frame. Jasper quirked his eyebrow in response, but nodded anyway to confirm that it was okay. He finished putting his binders in his backpack and greeted their teacher before leaving to go talk with Toad.
"Alright, what's up? Did Jasmyn do something?" he asked, to which Toad simply rolled his eyes.
"Look, just because I'm dating your sister doesn't mean she's the only thing I care about."
"Okay, then what's the problem?"
"The problem is you." Jasper looked at Toad confusedly.
"Alright, prom is coming up soon. You're going to have to ask someone out soon, right? I'm not saying it has to be in a situation where you end up dating or married or anything of the sort, but you're going to have to ask someone." Jasper sighed.
"Yeah I know. I really never wanted it to come to this."
"Regardless of whether you wanted it to happen or not, it did end up happening. You do realize that you need to make a choice soon." Jasper pursed his lips, hesitating. Even though he needed to suck it up and make up his mind, whether he wanted to go with someone or go with no one, and who that someone was going to be, he didn't want to break any of their hearts. Especially not when the both of them were going through a rough time and needed as much happiness in their lives to stay afloat.
He knew what he wanted to do, but was it the right decision? Jasper wasn't stupid. He could tell that both the girls surrounding him had some feelings for him. Or maybe he only realized that when he started feelings for having one of them?
Jasper let out a sigh, running his hands through his hair in exasperation. Toad looked at him pointedly, waiting for Jasper to say something.
"I don't want to hurt one of them though, you know? It sucks when you're stuck in a love triangle."
"Well, you know, you are allowed to take your time. No one is asking you to start dating someone now."
"Toad, my dude, you literally said like a minute ago that I had to ask someone out as soon as possible."
"Oh, I did, didn't I? In that case, I wanted to let you know, she is okay with anything as long as you're happy. Of course, she's going to be a little sad, but she's not going to have feelings for you for the rest of her life. She'll move on eventually, and at the same time, she'll get over her feelings if she needs to. She's always adapted."
"So I guess it was that obvious who I was gonna choose?" Toad nodded in response.
"Listen, you know I'm not gonna get mad at you for not choosing Mae. Yeah, I love her to death, but it's not like she won't grow from this. For once in your life, don't worry about other people, and just do things so that you're happy, get what I mean? Good things happen to everyone, but sometimes you need a little push and then you'll realize what you should do."
But what if, in the end, I don't want to take any of them? So that none of them are sad? Jasper thought, but quickly brushed it away.
"It's the end of senior year, Toad. Do I really want a relationship now when we're suddenly going to leave in less than a month and then go onto college? I doubt we'll even see each other when we're in college because of distance. Breaking up then will be worse."
"That's true, but everyone finds a way for it to work. Jasmyn and I are going to different colleges, but we're still going to meet up and talk to each other and keep communicating. Communication is key, that's what I learned from my brother and his boyfriend. Whatever you do, though, keep your interests at heart. You're allowed to do whatever you want in this world, even if it's not necessarily a norm. Except murder. Don't murder. But you get the point," Toad explained, and Jasper lightly smiled.
"Yeah, at least I know what I'm doing now."
For Jasper, the usually oblivious, dense rock, this was all new. He didn't know how to react to having to suddenly confess—but one thing he learned by being close friends with Mae Foster and everyone else was to follow your heart no matter what.
