Jake's POV

After a tiring game of basketball with Luke, we both laid down on the court staring up at the ceiling as we caught our breath. There was a long silence before Luke spoke up.

"Jake, Do you think there's such a thing as fate or karma?"

I thought about it for a minute. Resting my head on my palms.

"Sure, I guess."

I really wasn't understanding the basis of his question.

"Would you ever sacrifice anything for something you believe with all your heart is fate?"

"I dunno. I've never really thought about it. What could be so important to give up anything you already have?"

Luke pursed his lips. Then he let out a long breath.

"I don't know. I was just wondering."

"Would you?" I asked him.

Luke's eyes looked like they were sparkling as he stared blankly at the roof.

"I might. It depends." He finally answered.

"Depends on what?" I fished for a better answer.

"Depends..... on the sacrifice."

"What about the thing that is fate?" I asked.

"Thing that is fate, is fate. You can't choose fate. It exists. You can only will yourself to choose the sacrifice."

Luke said deep in thought. I'm even more confused. I should have just let him leave his answer as it was. But I asked for more.

"So what happens if you refuse to make the sacrifice?" I asked as I rolled to my side to face him while propping my head up in my hand.

Luke rolled on his side to face me.

"Then... If you choose not to make the sacrifice, your fate changes. But it still exists and there's a sacrifice regardless because you sacrificed your fate."

I sighed as I replayed what he said over again in my mind.

"I don't get it, Luke."

Luke sat up and huffed with impatience.

"Put it like this. For example.."

He held out his hands with his palms facing up like he was holding two invisible objects.

"In my left hand, I have a golden apple. Which is my sacrifice."

"Okay."

"In my right hand, I have a woman who says she can tell me who my soul mate is. This is my fate.

"Okay."

"So the woman says she will only tell me who my soul mate is if I give her the golden apple."

"Okay."

"Should I sacrifice the apple to have my fate? Or... keep the apple, but sacrifice my fate... If I keep the apple then my fate changes and becomes the sacrifice. And my fate changes because I wind up marrying someone who wasn't meant to be my soul mate or never marrying at all."

I scratched my head.

"I... still don't get it, Luke."

Luke threw his hands up in the air and laid back down on the ground.

"Forget it." He said with a huff.

"Sorry brother, I'm just not as philosophical as you are. You know me. I hate thinking deep."
