The music started. It was slow and sensual, unbefitting of the mood and theme of the party. Everyone was perplexed but slowly, one after one, they all felt the music taking over their senses and moved, danced as if soft whispers guided them.
Everywhere you went, the stares of masks followed you. It was a mysterious and exhilarating feeling. In this night, you could let go of everything and indulge in this new sensation that was strange yet alluring.
As people all danced to the music, you sought to free yourself from the enveloping atmosphere and wandered to a corner of the room.
Suddenly, another person tapped on your shoulder and whispered in your ear,
"Have you heard of the magical place?"
Confused, you shook your head.
"Here, I give you this. Use this to enter, it's located on the 6th floor at the far back."
The person pressed something in your hands and then left you alone wondering what just happened.
You stepped away from the spot and turned back. Another person was now there being given the same key card like yours. You blanked. Was that spot specifically for shady business?
The person with the key card left the hall. However, you weren't sure if you should also go and check out the place. It sounded intriguing yet definitely suspicious!
The keycard was white with golden lines painted over it. It looked fancy.
After you stood there rooted on the spot for a long while, you finally decided to give in and head up to the 6th floor. You left the hall and walked through the elegant hallway.
No one else but you were there. It seemed like not many wanted to leave the party behind. You took the lift and arrived at the 'infamous' 6th floor. What was waiting for you?
"At the far back..." you mumbled and looked around.
You had two options, either walk to the right or left far back. You sighed, why were the directions so vague? It was infuriating!
You made your way to one side of the end but found nothing. You made your way to the other end but also found nothing!
Was it all a joke and you fell for it? Was there a hidden camera?
However, just when you wanted to leave, you heard a female scream from the other end of the hallway. Then you saw a female running out of the room shouting,
"I'm sorry, forgive me," over and over again until she found her way to the lift and disappeared.
You froze on the spot. Maybe... maybe it wasn't a good idea to continue this?
Mechanically, like a robot, your steps took you to the lift and you abused the button like your life depended on it. However, even after minutes, the lift didn't come. It was stuck on floor 2.
"What the hell?" you cursed. Were you stuck here? There were no stairs either.
You sighed and decided to be brave. You already came here and couldn't escape anyway, so you should at least get to the core of this magical place.
You knocked on the door and heard, "Enter."
Hesitating for a second you finally found yourself inside the room. The door clicked behind you.
You blanked again as you pulled and pulled on the doorknob yet it was locked.
"I don't wanna die," you muttered under your breath as you took notice of the male before you wearing quite an exquisite mask.
The room was small and only had the most necessary things... like a sofa.
"What are you here for?" his deep and low voice made you jump a bit.
"I'd like to know that too," you whispered.
"Erm, I heard this is a magical place," you help up your keycard.
"Not you too..." he sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
"What are you talking about?" you wanted to leave!
This situation was so awkward. The male leaned against the sofa.
"Don't play dumb. In other words, you're here for drugs, right?"
Your face moulded into a blank sheet.
"What? I'm not!"
"Don't lie. The key card and the code word and the fact you know about this place is proof enough."
What in the world have you gotten yourself into? Drugs? What?
"I swear I'm not here for that! Some random person talked to me and gave me this just because I stood at the wrong spot!"
"Wrong spot?" he approached you and your faces were too close.
You could see his eyes sizing you up to determine if you were lying or not.
"So, you're not here for drugs?"
"No," you vehemently shook your head.
"Then why are you here?"
"Well, anyone's gotta be curious if they were told such weird things."
"Fair enough. Then I apologise," he took your hand and kissed the back of it.
His soft touch tingled on your skin and evaporated into heat inside your body.
"It's fine," you quickly retracted your hand, a bit startled, "But what are you doing here?"
"Me?" he sat on the sofa.
You followed him.
"I was tasked to rule out people who're here for drugs. The person you talked about giving you the card is an accomplice. There are rumours that someone wants to sell drugs and the event manager wanted to find out who and who would buy them. So, I'm stuck here, even though I'm not suited for this."
No! You're more than suited!
You thought but couldn't bring yourself to say those words and swallowed them down.
"Oh good. This scared me, I thought you'd force me to buy drugs or something. I was afraid it was some shady business up here!" you stretched yourself but your hand hit something followed by a dull sound.
You refused to move your head.
"Although I'm stuck here that doesn't mean the rules don't apply."
You refused to turn to him and were ready to bolt out of the room but then his hand grabbed you and pulled you backwards.
Your head landed on his lap and you looked up to his face that was revealed now.
He smiled slightly, his hands caressed your arms and then intertwined with your fingers.
His face came closer just before your noses touched and he said,
"I'm Zhang Xinjie, you should at least know the name of your punisher tonight. I hope we can get along well. Time won't matter today."
