"Yeonhee! Find out what Hyunsoo wants and deal with it, I'm busy right now." Father shouted from his office at home.
Mother was busy ordering the gardener around outside. Hyunsoo had come into her father's office with a deck of cards, asking whether he would teach her how to play.
"Take her away at once, and don't let her disturb me again." Father told the housemaid when she came in.
She was only 7 years old. She didn't know any better. She had no idea why her parents were always so busy. Maybe they were working hard to make sure they had a comfortable and happy life. But then, why was she always so sad? And why was she always told to leave her parents alone? Why did she have a second mother Yeonhee? The maids and the gardener looked after her more than her parents did. She didn't remember ever having any meals as a family. There were too many questions in her head, too many to ask or to have answered.
Jimin was watching her carefully the whole time Hyunsoo spent talking. She told him mostly how she felt lost and lonely growing up, and how she wanted to go to university and study while her parents wanted her to be married off for business deals. She also told him about her relationship with her parents up to this point. It was hard talking it through to someone she had never revealed herself to, but at the same time it was refreshing.
By the end, Hyunsoo realised she was holding her breath half the time, so she breathed in deeply and let it out slowly, feeling some burden roll off her shoulders at the same time. At first Jimin didn't say anything, but Hyunsoo noticed he was thinking about what he just heard. It was a lot to take in after all.
"Hyunsoo," he said after a while, "When you asked me to join you for the family dinner, I was mostly surprised, but I had a feeling that it was important to you otherwise you wouldn't have asked me so out of the blue."
"Was it obvious?" Hyunsoo said. It sounded more like a statement than a question the way it came out.
Still, Jimin replied, "You seemed nervous when Hoseok and I called you over before the badminton practice." He was looking off into the distant now. "I don't know if this is the right time to ask these questions, but why did you choose to take me?"
"Well, my mother didn't want me to bring Hoseok. She's already met him. I think they wanted to see what kind people I usually hang around with, and even though I only just met you recently, I feel like I can trust you the most out of my other friends. You seem to have this understanding in you that I don't really know how to describe, but I can feel it's there."
Did that even make sense? Thought Hyunsoo. However Jimin nodded and smiled, so she assumed he did understand.
The silence that filled afterwards was peaceful and helped Hyunsoo to calm down and feel good again. Letting it all out also helped, and she was glad it was Jimin with her, rather than someone else.
After a while, they got up and decided to take the train back to university. The thought did occur that Hyunsoo could just have called Kenny to drive them both back. Though she preferred this little quality time with Jimin more. It wasn't much but it was something. It helped her, being with someone she could feel she can trust.
Before parting ways outside Hyunsoo's house, Jimin kept his hands in his pockets and looked around everywhere. The way his expression changed made it suspicious, as if he was hiding something from her. Hyunsoo was looking to see if he pulls anything out, but there didn't seem to be anything. Instead, he took his hand out and held it up for her with a sudden grin on his face.
"You want a goodbye high five? Or shall it be a sort of toast to the continuation of our great friendship?"
Hyunsoo couldn't stop herself from automatically smiling at that. She could see his attempt to cheer her up by making her laugh. She grinned back and they high fived. It was loud and clear in the night.
"A toast," she said, laughing. "Thank you." And she really meant it.
From that day on, Hyunsoo and Jimin started getting along even better. They became such good friends, it was hard to believe that they had only met a week ago.
Just like that, a few weeks flew by and it was already November. News about a new drug party was going around since not many had really done anything for Halloween. It was happening at Jungkook's house again. Halloween had been a thing for people who would rather party and get drunk, but this drug party was more for people either looking to get high or just really social.
Recently, Hyunsoo and Jungkook had been having on and off sarcastic comments thrown at each other whenever they could. It was as if they tried to get as much as possible out whenever they saw each other, though instead of being outright rude, it was more like putting a spotlight on each other in an attempt to embarrass them.
To others, it may have looked like they completely hated each other, but Hyunsoo had long gotten over that. They didn't hate, otherwise why would they have bothered with each other? Their feelings were mutual with each other. They enjoyed teasing each other, even though it was usually Hyunsoo being teased and Jungkook being the teaser. That's just how their relationship had become. Except... there were still questions between them left unanswered. Over time, it just became harder to bring it up or just unnatural to randomly start talking about it. There was never a good time to have an honest and open conversation the way they did that night on the way to the hospital. Still, Hyunsoo was determined to talk to him again.
