"It's about everything that happened... I want to explain the relationship between me and Jieun," started Baekhyun.
Jieun. Jungkook's ex-girlfriend and the reason Hyunsoo broke up with Baekhyun.
He was about to continue when Hyunsoo cut in quickly. "Wait. How did you know I would be here?" she asked. "You said you were looking for me. How did you know I'd be here?"
"Well," said Baekhyun, looking a little awkward. "You seemed to have gotten close to Jungkook, or at least, that's what I thought from the last few times I spoke to you." Baekhyun stopped and rubbed his neck, then dropped his hand and looked at Hyunsoo. "I came here with little to no hope of finding and talking to you, but I found Jungkook and decided to try my luck. He told me that he didn't know where exactly, but you were here somewhere."
"Right." Hyunsoo didn't think Jungkook would have told Baekhyun anything. Turned out she was wrong.
"Look," said Baekhyun. "We didn't leave things on a good note, and honestly, I don't want us to have to try erase the good memories we've had, just because our relationship didn't end well." Baekhyun sighed, looking at her very earnestly. "What I'm trying to say is, I don't want us to hate or avoid each other. I want us to be able to say hi and make conversation when we see one another instead. I already lost you as a girlfriend... I don't want to lose you as a friend now."
Hyunsoo had to admit. She was a little touched at his sincerity. He wasn't lying to her, she could tell. Still, she didn't feel ready to be friends with him just yet. It brought out too many bad memories. There was no harm in talking about this though, so she nodded at him to show that she was ready to listen and they went inside, through the living room, then back outside from the front door, standing and leaning against the short brick wall at the front of the house.
Chen was still outside dealing with some people. He noticed Hyunsoo right away and watched Baekhyun like a hawk as they walked past him. Hyunsoo smiled and gave a quick wave at Chen, mostly to assure him that everything was ok. He wasn't even aware of her past relationship with Baekhyun, and here he was looking out for her. It was funny and weird, and also quite nice, the way she met so many people through Jungkook and the others, who now considered her as a friend as well.
"Before I explain what happened, I'll start with saying that I'm really sorry Hyunsoo," said Baekhyun. They were standing side to side, looking across at the houses in the dark. Though Hyunsoo could barely make out much, especially when her eyes hadn't adjusted to the darkness yet. "It's true that in the end, I did lie to you, but I want you to know that I never meant to hurt you. I was in the wrong and I'm sorry, but I didn't do it on purpose."
Hyunsoo didn't say anything right away. She let the cold silence sit between them for a while before she replied, "I'll listen to your explanation first, before I decide where you stand."
Baekhyun looked a little nervous at that but covered it up with a determined expression. He put his hands in his pockets and leant back to sit on top of the brick wall. Hyunsoo stayed where she was, slightly looking up at the sky without tilting her head up. The air was really nice, but it was also cold, so she wrapped her arms around herself and pulled the top of her turtleneck jumper up to her chin.
"You probably already found out from Jungkook, that he and Jieun were in a relationship from way before uni started. Jieun told me all about how he used to be a player and she changed him when they got together. I think that might be the reason she developed these trust issues, but Jieun started assuming that Jungkook was being 'unfaithful', as she said it, even though there was actually no proof." There was a short pause, before he added, "Personally, I don't think Jungkook did anything wrong, as much as I don't like the guy. It's because I've known Jieun for a long time, and I know for a fact that she's the kind to make her own assumptions and ride on them until someone literally slaps the proof in her face."
Hyunsoo was a little surprised. "How long have you known her?"
He shrugged. "We met sometime during the beginning of high school and became close friends pretty quickly."
Hyunsoo didn't know this. And she had been together with Baekhyun for a year... before she started uni herself, while he was in first year back then. This somehow upset her. "So, Jieun was doubting Jungkook? What about you? How did you get with her?"
"To teach Jungkook a lesson, she used me to make him jealous, or at least make him realise that he would lose her if he didn't get his act together."
Hyunsoo cut in again. "That doesn't make sense. You say you don't think Jungkook did anything wrong, but then you decided to help Jieun?"
"Listen, I didn't know the situation back then, not as much as I do now. She only told me that he was cheating on her so naturally, as her friend, I decided to help."
To Hyunsoo, this didn't sound like he was being completely honest, but she let it go for now and allowed him to continue. She could be wrong, but he just seemed as if he didn't want to give too much of an explanation.
Baekhyun continued, "I never planned for any of it to turn so... real. I didn't want to hurt you intentionally, but I messed up so bad I ended up hurting you anyway."
"You fell for Jieun then, when you guys were pretending?" Hyunsoo didn't make it sound like a question so much. It sounded more like a statement. "When was this?"
"Just before you started uni here. I was with her already, in the sense that I was helping her at first, but I started liking her afterwards." Baekhyun jumped off the brick wall and faced Hyunsoo. "I know I kept you in the dark, but I didn't like her like that from the beginning. It just happened so fast. It went wrong from the moment I started seeing her differently. I'm really sorry Hyunsoo."
"No, it went wrong from the moment you started helping her and started lying to me."
Hyunsoo's words hit Baekhyun like a punch in the stomach. He looked a little taken aback as he gazed at her, clearly upset.
"I can't completely forgive you," said Hyunsoo, "especially now that I know about your lies for sure. I accept your explanation though. I'm glad you came to find me and tried to apologise. One day, I can forgive you as well, with time. I don't think I can completely be friends with you though. I can't trust you anymore and I don't want to constantly remember the lies you told me. You could have just talked to me about the situation you were in and I would have helped you out."
"Hyunsoo," said Baekhyun, sounding like he wanted to say more, but didn't.
Hyunsoo had already started to move on from Baekhyun way before. With all the drama that had happened since then, she had other more important things to think about now to be honest. She wasn't angry at Baekhyun, just a little hurt that he never spoke to her about anything.
"Hyunsoo, I really am sorry," he said finally.
Hyunsoo gave him a small smile and said, "It's fine. Don't worry about it anymore now. You said it yourself, we have good memories we both wouldn't want to erase."
Baekhyun smiled back at her and nodded. "Thank you."
Now that they had talked about what happened, Hyunsoo felt a little refreshed as she went back inside to find Hoseok. She had a good time tonight, but it looked as if it was time to go home now. She didn't want to stay the whole night at Jungkook's place after all, and she knew Hoseok would leave with her right away, having only come for her in the first place.
It wasn't long until both were on their way home, with Hyunsoo filling Hoseok in on what had happened before she found him again.
