Life at home was as boring as Hyunsoo had imagined. There wasn't much happening for quite some time, and although she was occupied with fulfilling her sweet little punishment, it still didn't make time fly any faster.
Reading through the library was torture for her as well. She couldn't find anything even remotely interesting enough. The hardest part of this was when her mother would randomly come in to check on Hyunsoo every few hours. It felt like time had slowed down a little more every time she sat down with a book. She couldn't even pretend to finish it, not when her mother would suddenly start quizzing her at random times.
As Hyunsoo got herself comfortable on her reading chair in the library, she thought back on the text messages between her and Jungkook when she had tried to invite him as her plus one for Jae's birthday party. His reply had been about going with someone else, not telling her who specifically though. She wasn't even sure if he meant whether he was coming for Jae's party or if this was a completely separate occasion he was attending. Due to this confusion, of course she decided to ask for clarification, but there was no reply... how annoying.
Christmas came and went pretty quickly too. It was never a happy family kind of time of the year for Hyunsoo's family. It was more all about having extravagant dinners and get togethers with business partners. Hyunsoo hadn't even bothered inviting anyone, since there was no point when all they would do is sit and listen. Jungkook would've wasted his time too, they just had to wait until the business meeting, where they could somehow attempt to listen in. One of the things that made Hyunsoo smile after so long was when Kenny and Yeonhee were working together to decorate the Christmas tree. Hyunsoo had been trying to help them, holding the box of decorations and keeping them company, but it was amusing watching them balance on the ladder, taking turns and disagreeing with each other's choice of placement for everything. She was used to their every day disagreements from time to time by now, it was never something serious, it was just how they were with each other.
Something else that made Hyunsoo a little happier was when she received a call from Jimin on Christmas morning. It was a little unexpected since they hadn't spoken in a while now, and she thought they would next speak and see each other once their second semester started. However, the fact that he thought of her and called was enough to boost her energy and make her grin as she picked up her phone.
"Merry Christmas!" said Jimin loudly as soon as she picked up.
Hyunsoo giggled and replied, "Happy Christmas to you too!"
"How have you been? I'm so sorry for not getting in touch earlier. It's been crazy here!" exclaimed Jimin, sounding really excited but also a little tired. "I've been helping my parents move into the new house, so it's just been me slaving away since the holidays started."
Hyunsoo made a sound to convey her 'aw poor you' thought, rather than saying it. "Sounds like you need a friend to freshen you up."
She was trying to work out if she should mention that she'd been seeing Jungkook a lot since the holidays, but then decided against it. There was no point, she thought.
Jimin and Hoseok were her only other friends who knew of her family, and Hoseok had already declared how busy he was before she had a chance to ask him after Jungkook had been unclear with his invite. She wanted to take someone, since she'd already told Jae she would come. Maybe she should ask Jimin to accompany her to the party?
"Hey, Jimin? I have a favour to ask, but feel free to say no."
"Of course, what is it?" said Jimin. "If it's to see you, I'm already saying yes. We need to hang out! I've missed you."
She could imagine him pouting and making his eyes smile, just like a sideways moon. It was a cute thought that gave her a fluttery feeling in the stomach.
"Would you like to come to a family friend's birthday party with me? I already told him I'd go, but I realised I don't have anyone to take with me, and I don't want to go alone."
"Yes! I'd love to!" His tone of voice was so lifted, it made Hyunsoo laugh. "When is it? And what should I wear? I can't wait to see you, you know. I really mean it when I say I've missed you."
"I really missed you too," said Hyunsoo, beaming.
The first day of January came pretty quickly after that. Jimin had sent another text wishing Hyunsoo a 'Happy New Year'. She replied wishing him back, and they did the usual talk about how they couldn't wait to see each other, catch up and more. She truly was excited to see him.
Hyunsoo was already in the car with Kenny to get to the hall Jae had booked for his party. She wore a short turquoise dress with heels and had her hair straightened, which made it look even longer. To be honest, Hyunsoo felt a little nervous bringing Jimin again, only because, just like last time, she wasn't sure if Jimin would be comfortable around the kinds of people Hyunsoo had to deal with in her everyday life. She was hoping that they would be able to enjoy themselves at least a little, even through having to act formally with some people. It didn't matter if parents weren't here, Jae was, and so were others from rich families. She couldn't allow herself to get too comfortable.
They arrived after 20 minutes of driving in silence. Hyunsoo usually preferred to listen to music in journeys like this, so she had put her earphones in, letting Kenny know beforehand so he wouldn't bother for a conversation. It was more fun and relaxing that way for Hyunsoo. She also noted, during this journey, how she was beginning to feel much calmer around Kenny. He seemed to be as nice and trustworthy as Yeonhee, and Yeonjun.
"Thank you," said Hyunsoo, as she got out of the car. Kenny had actually gotten out as well and was coming to open the door for her, but Hyunsoo didn't bother waiting. She smiled at him and added, "Don't worry, I'd rather you stay comfortable."
"Me opening your door doesn't make me uncomfortable," replied Kenny, smiling back. He still sounded touched though, by Hyunsoo's kindness.
"Hyunsoo!"
She turned around and found Jimin, wearing a complete black suit. He looked really different, compared to his usual style at uni, which was always classy and chic, showing off his dancer self. This, Hyunsoo thought, was glamorous. She couldn't think of another word to describe him. Jungkook had looked really handsome and all kinds of unspeakable things, and then Jimin looked like a spicy range of a cute good looking gentleman looking for the meaning of life. He looked so... saucy.
Hyunsoo felt herself turn scarlet.
"Hey, Hyunsoo," said Jimin, looking down at her dress in awe. "You look beautiful."
She couldn't believe she had just thought that. Good thing she wasn't saying any of it out loud though.
"Thank you." She blushed a little.
Jimin's eyes had moved past Hyunsoo before they widened a little. He tried to contain his surprise, but it was evidently slapped across his face. Hyunsoo turned around to see what had happened and had to remind herself to keep a normal expression.
It was Jungkook. He was getting out of his own car, probably driven by his bodyguard, like Kenny was to Hyunsoo. They were both staring at Jungkook, who was grinning like a young boy making his first entrance at a party. He was wearing navy again, except it was a darker suit with a checkered pattern all over. It looked really good on him. He definitely knew what suited him best. That, or he just had a really good stylist at home.
