"That's your friend, right?" said Kenny, making it sound more like a statement than a question.

Hyunsoo nodded, turning her head towards her bodyguard. She was a little surprised to see that Kenny wasn't looking at Jungkook, since he asked about him. No, Kenny was looking at the driver who brought Jungkook here. Was it just her imagination, or did he seem to recognise the driver? There was that familiar glint in his eye after all, which revealed a sort of recognition. Hyunsoo wasn't sure, but she knew there was definitely something there. Maybe they went to the same bodyguard school...

More importantly though, what was Jungkook doing here? He hadn't even told her that he was coming to the party, or that he had been given an invite already. He failed to mention any of this to Hyunsoo when she last called him. How could he hide this from her? What was he thinking?

"Hyunsoo," said Jungkook as he got close enough. He nodded at her as a greeting, then turned his head to Jimin and stared.

Jimin looked at Hyunsoo, probably to avoid eye contact with Jungkook, and gave a small smile. "Shall we go in now? It's starting to get a little too crowded out here."

It was easy to tell that Jimin was kind of shocked to see Jungkook here, and Jungkook was most likely feeling the same. So wanting the situation to end quickly and move on, Hyunsoo stepped towards Kenny, who was still standing nearby with the car, and told him that she would call him once he can come to pick her up. Just when she finished saying that, Hyunsoo was immediately pulled aside by Jungkook. He was still grinning, but didn't sound as happy as he looked when he spoke in a whisper, "Seriously? Of all the people you could have brought... Jimin?"

Hyunsoo moved his hand away from her arm and took a peek behind her. Jimin had moved off to pay for his taxi fare, so his back was towards them. "It was either bring him or Hoseok."

"What happened to my main man Hoseok? Why didn't you bring him instead? Would have been much much better than... this." He dropped the good guy grin act and scowled.

"Hoseok was busy," she growled. "And besides, Jimin is just as great. That's why I've trusted him ever since I invited him for the family dinner."

Jungkook didn't say anything to that, instead, he took the energy to roll his eyes twice, looking at both Hyunsoo and Jimin. Then, he walked away, putting himself back in his cool guy persona and wearing his grin once more.

Damn it! She forgot to ask him why he was here, and why he didn't tell her he was coming to begin with.

Hyunsoo waved goodbye to Kenny, then joined Jimin, who was now watching Jungkook walk up towards the entrance of the big building ahead.

"Who did he come with?" asked Jimin, not moving his eyes away from Jungkook.

"I don't know."

Inside, the interior looked as if Jae had blown all his expenses on it, except that that wasn't possible because he was stupidly rich. The walls were decorated with flowers and mirrors on every side, while the hall itself was decorated in a way that made it seem purely for dancing and flirting. Literally. The floor was changing colour every second, as if they were at the club; there were a couple of bars on each end, along with some free snack tables on the sides; and the people, oh god, the people consisted of mostly females. Hyunsoo could hardly see many guys around.

Jimin must've noticed this too. He looked, awestruck, all around the room, then down at himself. "I'm in the minority."

Hyunsoo couldn't help but chuckle. She didn't expect that kind of response from him. "Yes, I'm quite surprised as well, but then again, this is Jae's birthday party. I've learned quite a lot on his character recently."

"Yeah, bet you have." Jimin looked like he was contemplating on whether he made the right choice in coming or not. "Let's enjoy ourselves as much as we can. This is our chance to catch up finally after so long." He beamed at her finally, seeming to have made up his mind that he made the right choice in coming. Or at least, Hyunsoo hoped he felt this way. She didn't want this event to put him off of any future invites. She thought the last family dinner would've done that, but Jimin was unfazed, as far as she could tell.

Then, Jungkook suddenly came out of nowhere and smirked at Hyunsoo. "Now this, this is heaven. I'm gonna go talk my way through as many women as I can here."

He was about to move ahead, going past Hyunsoo, but she grabbed his sleeve right away before he had even finished his sentence. "Wait! You need to explain yourself. Who invited you here? How come you never even told me?"

Without even looking at her, Jungkook moved Hyunsoo a little closer towards him, and out of reach from Jimin. "You gonna let go of my sleeve?"

"Not unless you answer my question."

That's when they met their eyes. "I wanted to surprise you. Jae invited me after all."

"What?" She nearly screamed it. She was so confused now. How did this happen? Since when did they have each other's numbers? Let alone sending a birthday invitation...

"Everything ok?" asked Jimin, coming closer to fill the gap that Jungkook had created between her and Jimin. "What's up?"

"Nothing," answered Hyunsoo, but she kept her eyes on Jungkook. "Why didn't you tell me he invited you?" Jungkook just shrugged, so Hyunsoo continued talking, feeling a little helpless at this point. "If you had come with me when I asked you, we could have just worked together to do whatever we needed to to get sorted out for, you know, the meeting."

Hyunsoo didn't want to say too much since Jimin was listening, and he wasn't aware of her and Jungkook's little pact. She wasn't even sure if Jimin was aware of everything Hyunsoo knew on Jungkook's family. He probably did, they were best friends in the past, but she couldn't be completely sure. Better not risk it, she thought.

"Doesn't matter for now. We can do that later as well," said Jungkook. "Just stick with your man, and I'll go to my women." He threw her hand away from his sleeve and plastered his grin back on, before giving her a salute and walking away.

What's up with him? Why was he behaving like this? He was acting more arrogant than usual. His words, his look... it made Hyunsoo feel like all the nice moments she thought they had together were just in her head... they hadn't been real, and it was just one sided. Jungkook didn't see her as the friend that she saw in him.
