Hyunsoo wasn't sure how long she had been sitting there for. She didn't cry the entire time though, just for a little while in the beginning, before switching to having no energy to do anything, not even to go clean herself up. She was in deep thought, about a lot of things that she couldn't even start to unscramble. She just wished she could speak to Hoseok right now.
"Hyunsoo?"
She looked up with a blank expression and found Jimin walking towards her, relief written across his face.
"I was looking everywhere for you. You've been gone for over an hour so I figured I should check, but then didn't find you in any of the balconies," he said, sitting down next to her. Jimin noticed her swollen eyes right away and added in worry, "Is everything okay? Did something happen?"
Hyunsoo didn't answer right away. She honestly didn't know what to say, she wasn't in the mood to interact with anyone anymore. This was the last place she wanted to be in right now. "I'd like to be left alone," was all she could muster.
There was a second of hesitation before he said, "You know I'm here for you, right? You can tell me anything."
Hyunsoo couldn't help from keeping the coldness in her voice at that. "Really now? And why should I tell you about my problems? You know enough already, a complete contrast of what I know about you."
Jimin looked taken aback by Hyunsoo's reply. He looked down for a second, before trying to meet her eyes, but Hyunsoo couldn't do that. She was replaying the words Jungkook had said to her about Jimin. It was true, all of it. Hyunsoo felt ashamed, yet irritated for having to realise the way she did. How could she have let that happen?
"Hyunsoo..." said Jimin.
"You know it's true," she continued. "Why was it always me opening up to you, while you sat back and listened to all my drama?" Hyunsoo looked down for a moment and mumbled, "You never even trusted me."
Jimin flinched, but carried on speaking in a calm voice. "Let me explain why."
"What is there to explain?" Hyunsoo hurled the question in nearly a whisper, that's how low her tone went. "Look, I have stuff to deal with at the moment, so I'm leaving early tonight to sort that out, and I'd rather not talk to someone who's practically a stranger to me anyway."
"Listen Hyunsoo," said Jimin, standing up and looking down at her. "I know I encouraged you to talk without me sharing anything in return, but aren't you being a bit too cold with me?"
"There are many things I could say about you as well, like being closed off from me since the beginning." Hyunsoo felt exhausted suddenly, due to everything that happened since the beginning of the evening to now. "I shouldn't have invited you here..."
"No, don't say that. You trusted me, and it was for good reason."
"But did you?"
"Hyunsoo." Jimin looked a little lost and hurt.
"I already told you Jimin," she said with a sigh, "I want to be left alone. I'm not in the mood to talk right now." Hyunsoo didn't wait for Jimin to speak this time, she took her phone out and called Kenny to take her home. There was no way she could stay here any longer. She wanted to go back and think, and just process everything that had happened tonight.
Jimin hadn't bothered to say anything anyway during this time. He was quietly looking down at his hands, like he was feeling regretful about the situation. Hyunsoo decided not to dwell on Jimin too much, otherwise she knew she would continue the conversation and end up saying something she'd later feel guilty for.
Luckily, Kenny picked up right away and told her to come outside right away, he'd be there in a minute. Apparently, he was already nearby.
Before speeding towards the exit, Hyunsoo took one last look at Jimin, who had his head down and wasn't looking back. There was a mix of guilt and regret weighing down on her shoulders. Then, she turned to look back at where she had run in from, when she needed to sit down to be by herself. This had been one hectic night, she thought, shivering, even thought it wasn't cold.
"And now, I'm really frustrated at just about everything right now. Especially at myself!" said Hyunsoo into the phone.
It was still the same night. She had quickly gotten changed, once she arrived back home, and had made sure her mother thought she was taking a bath right now. Mother wasn't being very approving of late night phone calls, so there Hyunsoo was, sitting on the wide window sill of her bathroom, with an empty bathtub.
"Hyunsoo, I have to be honest with you," started Hoseok, after listening to all the events that took place at Jae's birthday party. "It's not exactly as if you asked Jimin to share something about himself. I mean, did you ever stop and pause, to hear what he had to say?"
Hyunsoo was stumped. "What?"
"It's true. Lately, you've been talking a lot more about yourself, and your life, but you need to remember that the people around you exist and their problems, they exist too. Like I said, I'm only telling you this since I'm your best friend, and I don't want to take sides just because I prefer that person more."
"The truth is, of course I realised the issue when Jungkook said all those things to me, but, you know, it's annoying that I had to realise the way I did. From Jungkook of all people!"
"To be honest, his behaviour sounds really strange and, out of character. Did something happen at the party?"
Hyunsoo hadn't told Hoseok anything about Jungkook's family. It wasn't her secret to tell, and besides, she doubted Jungkook would be glad she's going around telling people about his drug use, even if she did hate him right now.
"Not that I can think of."
"Well, I think for that argument, both of you are at fault for different things. But the thing is, you're both weirdly right in your own places as well. I mean, I'm sure Jungkook is going through some stuff, and you, I know are very very stressed about your own family and the business stuff, which by the way I can never get my head around."
Hyunsoo smiled at his last comment, then frowned. "That doesn't excuse the way I've been acting lately."
"You need to give yourself more credit for realising and wanting to change that. You said it yourself, you're frustrated at yourself, right? The next step, is to actually make the change." Hoseok sounded a lot more lifted than Hyunsoo. His tone alone made Hyunsoo imagine him walking around happily, talking to Hyunsoo as if he was here with her.
"I don't think I'm ready to face anyone yet, but I know I should probably talk to Jimin..."
She could almost hear him shuffling around in his room when he said, "Sometimes, all you need is some time out, before you go to talk to him."
With that, Hyunsoo knew what she had to do. Her mind had definitely cleared. He was right, she had been annoyingly selfish, but that didn't mean she could do anything from here onwards. First things first, she needed to contact Jimin.
"Don't leave it for too late though!" added Hoseok. "Oh crap!"
The phone cut off. Hoseok wanted Hyunsoo beforehand that he was in trouble for pranking his younger cousins, so he wasn't actually allowed to talk to her over the phone. It was funny, thought Hyunsoo. Both Hyunsoo and Hoseok being in trouble at the moment for something that was nothing compared to what they were actually worried about when they were on campus. Hoseok was lucky to have a loving family though, even if his mother still wanted to treat him like he was a child. Hyunsoo chuckled with that thought and went to bed.
Hopefully, she wished, she'd wake up with a much clearer head.
