Kenny was waiting just outside Hyunsoo's room, looking like he'd seen something unspeakable. "I'm sorry once again, I didn't mean to barge in. This may sound like an excuse, but my last employment was amongst men. Still, it was irresponsible of me to come in without knocking first."
Hyunsoo shook her head wanting to change the topic quickly, and replied, "No, it's ok. As long as you knock from now on, I'll forget this ever happened."
Kenny sighed in relief and put on his business face. "I found something that caught my attention and thought it would be of some interest to you as well, considering how much time you're spending with this boy..." His eyes moved past Hyunsoo and into her room.
"What do you mean?"
"Firstly, I'd like to explain. When your parents hired me, I was put in charge of your protection, which means I needed to do what I did. I hope you understand." Kenny paused for Hyunsoo to take this in, before he continued, "Yesterday, once the party was underway, I decided to follow my instinct and investigate your friend. I've received the evidence just this morning, it's worth taking a look at right away." He pulled out an envelope from an inner pocket of his jacket, then after a moment of hesitation, he held it out for Hyunsoo to take.
"Jeon Jungkook is bad news. I would like to advise you to stay away from him. The evidence suggests he's quite dangerous. I'm sorry about this, but it's for your own safety," added Kenny.
Hyunsoo couldn't believe her eyes when she opened the envelope to find photos of... Jungkook. "Thank you, Kenny," she said, feeling her head start to feel heavy, "I'd like to take a look for a bit longer. I'll return these to you later."
Kenny must've known what she was about to do, but he didn't say anything, just simply nodded and let her go back into her room.
When Hyunsoo walked back in and looked around her bedroom, she found that Jungkook had moved over to the sofa where she slept last night. He was moving his fingers fast over his phone's keyboard when Hyunsoo came closer and threw the envelope onto his lap. Without a word, Hyunsoo stayed standing and looked down at him, waiting for him to open it up. He did just that. Jungkook seemed to have also sensed the change in Hyunsoo's mood, which was why he opened it calmly and carefully.
His eyes widened just as Hyunsoo's had when he looked at the photos. "Uhh. Let me guess, Kenny found these?" There was a lot of surprise in his voice that he didn't bother trying to hide, which actually made him less suspicious in Hyunsoo's eyes.
For a minute, no one spoke. Instead, they both stared at the photos. Jungkook, along with his dad presumably, were holding a gun each and looked like they were taking cover from someone else shooting at them. They were surrounded by a bunch of boxes and bags lying around, lots of them.
Finally, Hyunsoo decided to speak first and ask what was most on her mind. She couldn't believe she had let herself trust Jungkook right away and tell him about her family, when he could be... "Why did you decide to help me with trying to improve the businesses on both sides? Especially when I have evidence that you do stuff like this? That's your dad isn't it? What are you two doing?"
Jungkook was still looking at the photos, especially the one with only him in it. He was stuffing the boxes with smaller bags, that could only have contained drugs that run the business. The worst part was that the look on Jungkook's face was cold and ruthless in all of them. It looked like they were both stealing, although Hyunsoo didn't want to jump to conclusions... but what else could it have been?
As if he'd read Hyunsoo's mind, Jungkook put his hands up and said, "Please don't jump to any conclusions just yet. What you're seeing is true. You probably guessed that the boxes and bags are filled with drugs as well." He took a deep breath and let his hands fall back onto his lap. "The reason why I told you that I want to end my dad's business and bring it down, is because it's running on stolen goods. The whole business is basically illegal, and the worst part is, we have a department full of weird and experimental drugs that goes out to some of the pharmacies in this country. That, meaning there's some dangerous stuff being sold to the general public."
Hyunsoo's head went from feeling heavy, to feeling floaty. This was way worse than what she expected Jungkook's dad's side of the business to be like. "Ok, that is definitely bad, and on a different scale to my father... so, I get why you're helping me now, but I don't exactly get why you're helping me and helping your dad... why are you with him in the photos?"
Jungkook stood up then and came closer towards Hyunsoo, facing her. Rather than getting nervous, she felt a mixture of being worried and a little relaxed, since it seemed like he was about to share something really personal. "I hate my dad, always have, but you have to remember, he adopted me. I can't show my hatred for him. I worked to get to a point where he could trust me and really believe that I can inherit the business from him, otherwise he could have thrown me away like he did to the last kid he adopted." Jungkook looked a little sad when he said that last bit.
Hyunsoo didn't know what to say exactly. It didn't feel like the right moment to say anything just yet anyway, because Jungkook seemed to be deep in thought. Other than that, his explanation was unexpected, but reassuring. She was glad to have found this out, and also glad to have learned that he didn't have any malicious intent. However, this was a lot to take in and she needed time to go over some of the things.
"Hyunsoo," said Jungkook suddenly.
He was looking at her again. For some reason, Hyunsoo felt her heart beat quicken.
"Yes?"
"Do you really not remember me?"
Hyunsoo had to think twice before she answered. "What do you mean? Was there a point when I didn't recognise you?"
This weirdly got more confusing than finding out that Jungkook has experience in handling guns and looting drugs.
He licked his lips slowly, making Hyunsoo feel her own lips dry up. "No. I mean, you don't remember me back when you were still in middle school?"
"Huh?"
"We went to different schools, but we've met before." He smiled, and it wasn't his usual smirk either. "I recognised you from the second time we met in badminton tryouts, that's why I've been annoying you since then." And then he smirked.
"If you knew me... why didn't you say? I don't remember ever meeting you before university," said Hyunsoo. She didn't know what was more shocking, the fact that she and Jungkook had met before, or the photos she obtained from Kenny.
He shrugged. "There wasn't a reason to it. We weren't friends or anything, and to make it clear, I didn't know about your family. I just knew you were rich, that's all."
Just when Hyunsoo was about to ask more questions, since there was so much left to say on the two topics they opened up, Kenny knocked on the door urgently and said, "Your mother is looking for you. Please hurry and hide your friend somewhere." He stopped, then added, "Or, better yet, tell him to leave through the window!"
Jungkook held back a smile at that. Hyunsoo would've found the situation a little more amusing as well, if she hadn't been so confused at the conversation they just had. There were so many unanswered questions left, and she still hadn't found out how she and Jungkook had even met all those years ago.
"Hyunsoo," called Jungkook.
She looked to her side and made direct eye contact with Jungkook, realising that he had already made his way to the window. He was holding the edge of the open window, having put one foot up on the window sill ready to jump out, seemed a little bizarre at first sight. There was a loop sided smile on his face when he nodded a goodbye. No words were needed.
He quickly jumped out to catch himself on the fence against the house. Hyunsoo knew he'd probably be fine, but she couldn't hold still and not check on him, so she rushed to the window and looked out. By that time, Jungkook had already got himself down to the ground and was walking away with his hands in his pocket.
Hyunsoo shook her head, smiling to herself.
