The next day, Hyunsoo and Jimin decided to get to work right away and go to the library together so that they could get started on their research. They were on their way to the top floor of the building — which had quieter rooms with more computers — when they noticed Taehyung sitting by himself in the distance. Without having to say anything to each other, Hyunsoo and Jimin automatically changed their course and made their way to Taehyung first, both wearing grins on their faces.
"What are you doing by yourself?" asked Jimin, sitting down next to Taehyung, who looked quite surprised to see them as he took his headphones off. Still, he smiled at the sight of them.
Hyunsoo stood standing next to Jimin and looked down at the book in front of Taehyung. It was full of difficult looking equations that Hyunsoo just had to look away. Maths made her eyes hurt.
"I've been preparing for my maths quiz nearly all day today. It's so hard and I only have two days left," said Taehyung, making a sad face as he said this.
"Why don't you come with us to the computers? We need to do some work too so let's sit together," suggested Hyunsoo, pointing behind her.
Taehyung's expression shook off the sad face and turned happy as he nodded. He got up to pack his bag immediately and talked about the amount of work he has gotten from all his modules. He must've been lonely if he was working here all day by himself, thought Hyunsoo. She was glad they were here to keep him company now though.
A thought passed through Hyunsoo's head at that same moment. She realised how she was getting closer with people who used to be or still are close to Jungkook. It was as if her and Jungkook had begun to share their circle of friends slowly, especially Hoseok from Hyunsoo's side suddenly joining the friendship band who had nothing to do with them before, just as Hyunsoo. It was a weird realisation, but it was nice. She was glad she met these new people.
Once they took their seats and started studying, time seemed to fly quicker than when Hyunsoo used to come here by herself. The major difference was that nowadays, she talked a lot more to the people around her, otherwise she wasn't usually like this. She preferred it though, mainly since it was always so fun joking around with people she was getting to know still. She learned more every day.
This time, she talked to Taehyung a lot more, talking to him about her own work as well as his. Jimin joined in too and they spent a lot of time talking about their own paths and how they chose their course at this uni. They did all this while trying to actually get some work done as well, which wasn't so hard for Hyunsoo and Jimin, but Taehyung needed to focus more on his equations to be able to understand what he was doing.
"I can't believe you can easily work through these things," said Hyunsoo to Taehyung, leaning over his shoulder to take a look at what he was writing. She had gotten up to stretch her legs a little. They had already been sitting here for nearly two hours.
"Well, some of them are hard," admitted Taehyung, "But it gets better once you know the formulas."
That reminded Hyunsoo. She glanced at him from the side and hesitated, but then said before she changed her mind, "Why did you choose maths? You didn't really go into detail before."
He hadn't. Once Hyunsoo and Jimin had told their side, he had simply said that he was always good at maths so decided to do just that. It wasn't very clear, and to be frank, Jungkook's words were ringing in Hyunsoo's ears at this point.
Taehyung spun around in his chair to face Hyunsoo. "To be honest, there isn't much to say about it. I liked it, I was good at it, I continued it. Easy."
Hyunsoo blinked. "What about science?"
"Huh? What..." His face changed. "Oh, I get it. Yeah I wanted to do science before, but my parents told me maths will come in handy because that's where my passion lies, also I will end up with a job related to maths anyway so it's better for me."
This sounded nothing like what she imagined. Did Jungkook lie? Or was Taehyung just good at acting?
"So," said Taehyung, "Who told you about science? Yoongi? Jimin? Or was it Jungkook?" He studied her face, making Hyunsoo feel like some kind of program that was crashing because she didn't know whether to tell him or not. "I'm guessing it was Jungkook then," he concluded with his own answer, chuckling to himself.
As if Taehyung had just summoned him, Jungkook's voice came out of nowhere along with another girl's voice that sounded a lot like Minseo. All three of them turned to the direction of the stairs on their far right. Jungkook and Minseo had just reached the top and were looking for a place to sit.
"I'm so glad we're working together on this! I didn't realise how passionate you can be," said Minseo excitedly, holding on to Jungkook's arm...
Jungkook's arm! Thought Hyunsoo. Wasn't Minseo wary of Jungkook only weeks before?
"Let's find a quiet place for just us two together," replied Jungkook. He said it without much emotion, like he had just woken up from deep sleep and couldn't be bothered to show much excitement for anything.
Hyunsoo couldn't take her eyes off of the couple walking her direction. They were about to pass by their seats, as they made their way to the 'quiet place'. Jimin was nudging Hyunsoo, probably to tell her to just ignore this, but she couldn't help it. Taehyung was staring with Hyunsoo as well.
She didn't know whether Jungkook genuinely didn't notice her, or if he was completely wiping out her existence from his memory, because as he walked past her seat, his eyes landed nowhere near her. They made no eye contact just like last time when they saw each other, and he walked past without any kind of acknowledgement towards Hyunsoo. She hated to admit it, but this time it was more Jungkook ignoring her, than Hyunsoo doing it to him.
A second later however, Jungkook stopped in his tracks. Minseo had only just noticed Hyunsoo then, but didn't say anything. Jungkook turned around and looked at Taehyung instead.
"Hey, you coming to see Yoongi later?" asked Jungkook.
Taehyung nodded slowly. "Course."
Jungkook nodded and, taking Minseo by her shoulder, walked away without a backwards glance.
There was a long silence after that between the three left behind on their computer desks. Hyunsoo didn't realise her mouth was gaping open. What just happened?
"Damn," said Taehyung, while Jimin was just shaking his head slowly staring after Jungkook.
Hyunsoo should have known that the gallery and the library incident wouldn't be the last ones. Over the next week, there had been multiple times when they'd run into each other and the blanking would continue. Sometimes, Hyunsoo ignored him too, but the times she didn't, she couldn't help but feel hurt at how they were treating each other. It felt childish at this point.
Soon, the weather was turning cold and the jackets were being replaced by thicker coats and scarves. It wasn't snowing yet, but there were icy surfaces in some areas. Hyunsoo couldn't wait for it to snow later on. She loved it, but when the time came, she knew she would hate it. It reminded her of her child self who enjoyed making snow angels and having snow fights. Hyunsoo had never been into making snowmen because it took too long, she was never bothered. However now that she was older, she noticed how the snow would disturb her daily life, which is why she started losing her love for it. The joy of waiting for the snow never disappeared though.
It was strange, she thought, waiting for something but ending up not enjoying it. She was thinking about this as she was washing the dishes. Hyunsoo had just finished her dinner and was about to go up now.
With slightly wet hands, she took her phone out of her back pocket and tried to unlock it with her fingerprint as usual. It vibrated a few times after not recognising her thumb, even after wiping her hands. Hyunsoo cursed under her breath in annoyance and began to type her password instead, just as she started going up the stairs.
She stopped in the middle. 'Password incorrect'. Hyunsoo tried again. 'Password incorrect. Don't tell me, she thought. 'Password incorrect'. She wanted to scream.
