Walking up to the bodyguard was pretty intimidating, but the option to freeze on the spot wasn't available since he was already looking at Hyunsoo when she reached the top of the stairs. It would have been scarier if she had stalled before approaching him.
Now that she had the chance to take a closer look at him, he didn't just look big and muscly, he also looked mean enough to beat someone up the second he got the signal to, probably enjoying it even. Hyunsoo gulped, but put on a brave face and tried to relax. "Hello, how do you do? I am Hyunsoo." she said, accidentally putting on the extra polite tone that her mother worked her so hard on.
Stupid, stupid, stupid! Why did she give her name away like that? He probably thought she was a weirdo now.
There was absolutely no response, not even a movement from him. He just stared at her.
She tried again, clearing her throat. "I was told by Jae that you are one of his best bodyguards, and I feel very unsafe to go outside at this late hour. Would you care to accompany me?"
He continued to watch her like a hawk.
Hyunsoo sighed, visibly showing her frustration. "Listen," she said. An exasperated feeling was building up in her now. There was no time to lose. She didn't want to get caught. "I was asked to help Jae with something, so would you mind just handing over his phone instead of completely ignoring me? That's all I need from you."
This time, she finally got a reaction, although she wasn't sure this was what she was looking for. Hyunsoo had spoken with so much conviction at the end, he blinked a few times in surprise and looked as if someone had punched him in the face.
He had a very deep rough voice when he said, "You should have said this in the beginning."
Now it was her turn to be puzzled. "What?"
"I didn't realise you were his new lady friend." He took the phone out and held it out for her to take.
"Oh, um, of course. Thanks," she replied, taking the phone and holding it close by her side. "Yes, I should get back to Jae now."
"I would appreciate it if you didn't mention my ignorance to him."
"I'll make sure to say only good things. Jae listens to me, so you don't have to worry about that," she said.
Hyunsoo took a step back, wanting to leave quickly because she knew if she stayed any longer, there would be a chance that she'd give away her real intentions. Her acting skills were not the best, so keeping this up so far was hard enough. However, as soon as she spun around to go, Hyunsoo found herself facing Jungkook right in front of her.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" said Jungkook, sounding unusually annoyed. He moved his narrowed eyes to the bodyguard past her, saying to him, "Don't get any ideas. She's not one of his girls."
Hyunsoo turned around in horror and said quickly, "No! I am. Jungkook is just jealous." She tried to sound as innocent as possible. "You probably already know what Jae thinks of Jungkook, seeing as you are one of his closest bodyguards, from what he told me."
Jungkook looked even more annoyed then, and the bodyguard looked a little taken aback by Hyunsoo's words. He probably felt a little under pressure, seeing as how he'd lost his mean glare, replacing it with confused eye movement going back and forth between Hyunsoo and Jungkook. However, before he could accuse them of anything, Jungkook took this chance to grab Hyunsoo's arm and aggressively guide her back down the stairs.
A risky glance back was all she needed to understand that he had probably figured them out. The bodyguard was looking down at his hands, as if he'd done something terrible, but couldn't do or say anything now that they had escaped, unless he wanted to get in trouble with Jae...
