"Come on! I need to see better counter attacks here!" yelled the coach. "Faster! Stronger! Go, go, go!"
He was watching Hyunsoo and Hoseok play against each other. It was a difficult match because both were very evenly skilled. They had started learning badminton at the same time when they were younger, and since they also always helped each other over the years, they even learnt each other's tricks during the matches.
Most other pairs were already done with their match, but Hyunsoo and Hoseok were one of the few who kept going. Everyone had been switching partners every score, and Hyunsoo had already gone against five other people.
"You've gotten better," huffed Hoseok as he ran forwards to block Hyunsoo's attack. "Just don't let my racket distract you as it usually did."
"So have you," she replied in a loud voice. Her smile was widening as she continued. "And don't worry about the racket. I'm not the young Hyunsoo anymore."
"I'm not worried about that, but thanks for the reply. I win."
Hoseok scored just then, and the whistle blew. By then, they had been the only pair left to score yet. Everyone else was waiting. Whoops.
"Hoseok! How did you manage to distract me like that? I didn't even realise!" started Hyunsoo right away.
Hoseok shook his head in mock disappointment and chuckled at his best friend. Hyunsoo spun away with a wave and laughed, before nearly bumping into someone.
Hyunsoo locked eyes with Jungkook as he moved away from her to stand right across Hyunsoo. They didn't break eye contact as he did this.
"Time to whoop your butt to the floor again," said Jungkook smirking.
"You wish, you overconfident sack of –"
The whistle blew and Jungkook made the first serve right away, catching Hyunsoo off guard. Still, she managed to counter the attack swiftly.
The coach had been moving further away from Hyunsoo to observe a different pair, and by that it was glare at the other pair, so at least Hyunsoo didn't feel as nervous as she did when playing with Hoseok just earlier. Although, dealing with Jungkook's game-on expressions was a completely different obstacle to handle.
It was a fierce match. And again, everyone ended up waiting for them to finish. Jungkook's face was so concentrated, but Hyunsoo couldn't lose to him. She had to get him back for try outs. However, just as she thought this, Jungkook found an opening and smashed the shuttlecock on Hyunsoo's side.
"Damn it!" said Hyunsoo out loud in a frustrated tone.
Jungkook heard and looked at her smugly. It annoyed her even more.
"Still arrogant as always," commented Jimin out of nowhere, walking to stand next to Hyunsoo and facing Jungkook.
The previous smug expression was completely wiped off from Jungkook's face, and instead, he looked away to the next person he had to battle.
"You need way more practice before you can beat me Hyunsoo," said Jungkook, before moving along.
Jimin was shaking his head. "He hasn't changed..."
"Ignore him," said Hyunsoo, "I don't understand why he's like that to you when you guys used to be so close."
Jimin looked shocked. At the same time, the whistle blew and the next game started.
"How do you know that?" asked Jimin.
Hyunsoo realised immediately how Jungkook had told her to keep her mouth shut about it.
"I...I, uh..." she stuttered.
Hyunsoo served the shuttlecock and kept her eyes on that instead of Jimin.
"It's alright. I'm not mad that you know, just surprised. You would have found out soon enough anyway, especially since you keep getting tangled up with Jungkook nowadays, and this is just based on what I see and what you told me last time we met." Jimin looked a little sad as he spoke. He reverted the shuttle to Hyunsoo's side. "I hope that doesn't change things between us. I don't know how much he told you."
"Actually," said Hyunsoo, she was panting now from the amount of running she'd done side to side. Jimin was very good at manipulating where he wanted the shuttle to go. "He hasn't told me anything except for the fact that you used to be close."
In contrast to Hyunsoo, Jimin had barely even jogged to either side. He would simply walk or take a few steps and hit back with force that seemed to come out of thin air. He was a hard opponent. Different from Jungkook, but with the same difficulty.
"I see."
Hyunsoo wished she hadn't mentioned this at all because Jimin looked so sad and she didn't know how to cheer him up exactly.
"Um, so I have this project I have to do for my course, and I'm supposed to use other people as part of my final piece. I remembered what you said and thought maybe I could draw you dancing? It's the idea you had during our walk."
Jimin brightened at that. "I would love to. I wasn't sure if it was something we would do at all, but I'm glad you said this."
"Of course we would do this sooner or later, even if it was our own personal project! The opportunity came and I took it." Hyunsoo smiled, watching as Jimin returned the smile and smacked the shuttle on Hyunsoo's side.
She lost again.
That evening, Hyunsoo had Jimin come to her house with his suit to help him get ready for the formal family dinner. Although Jimin didn't really know what to expect or what Hyunsoo's family was even like, it turned out Jimin wasn't even keen on questioning her about it, which relieved her immensely. Still, she wondered if he was curious at all and how much explaining she would have to do by the end of it.
The thought of having Jimin with her was horrifying and comforting at the same time. Mostly because even though he made her feel happy inside, her family would surely pick on something the minute they get the opportunity to.
"I'm a bit nervous. Are you sure I look alright?" asked Jimin, standing in a black classy suit in front of Hyunsoo. "I've never been to a formal dinner like this before."
She looked at him in astonishment. She always thought Jimin was the perfect mix of cute and sexy, but she never thought he would look this handsome.
"You look amazing," said Hyunsoo in awe, which made Jimin chuckle. And it was the most angelic chuckle she had ever heard.
"You look just as great," he said, looking at her up and down.
Hyunsoo was wearing a midnight blue dress this time that went all the way down to her knees. She smiled, in embarrassment.
"So where is this place we're going to?" asked Jimin
"It's at my family home, and we'll also be seeing some other guests as well."
"Well the formal wear can't be for nothing. I'm guessing extended family and friends then. Ok, well, for a second I thought we were going to fly to England to meet the royal family or something."
Hyunsoo did a double take. Jimin widened his eyes and pointed at himself.
"Ha, kidding. Just kidding. I just had a thought when you asked me to bring my best suit that you might be taking me to a rich people place. Don't worry though, it was just a funny thought I had."
Oh boy, thought Hyunsoo.
