song - I Will Never Fall In Love With You by Sam Pinkerton

~"I think I'll go in my bare feet
And walk until they start to bleed
So you can see how far you are from me
Sorrow starts to flood my eyes
There's never room for compromise"~

No matter how many times Millie begged, her mother would not relent. She pleaded with her, insisting that she would not need somebody to lean on around the school, that she would get by just fine by herself. She couldn't bear to hear the comments around school, the blind girl being the new victim that needed to be guided around the school, not even able to walk on her own. Millie's cheeks burned with embarrassment of the thought of someone having to take her to her classes, like an object hanging onto their arm to sit and look pretty.

"I will take the white cane!" she insisted, trying to make her eyes pleading, wishing that she could see her mother's resolve starting to crack. "I will take that with me everywhere so that I don't bump into things!"

Her mother rubbed a hand over her face. "You threw it away yesterday."

"I can get another one..." Millie grumbled, "Just please...please don't make him come around. I don't want to have to be paraded around school like some kind of charity case."

"Finn is a nice boy, Millie" her mother scolded.

Millie groaned. "I never said that he wasn't! I don't even know him but I don't want a stranger to take me everywhere...w-what if I need alone time? Or what about when I go to the bathroom or something-

Kelly sighed. "He is not escorting you everywhere, Millie."

"I-I just-"

"I just don't understand why you're so worked up over this..." her mother sighed, "What is the real problem here, sweetheart?"

Her fists clenched automatically, a sharp sigh escaping her. Her mother did not understand, and she never would know what it was like, having to depend on everyone else around her. She did not feel embarrassment prickling her skin whenever someone made a comment, wishing her the best of luck in her recovery, not knowing that there was hardly any chance of her getting her sight back. She had never felt the shame of having to hang on someone else's arm for the rest of her life, depending on them to make sure that she didn't trip or fall like a toddler trying to walk for the first time. Millie felt like a baby shoved into a diaper, told to sit there and let others take care of her like an invalid, unable to do anything by herself. Nobody would understand what it felt like to have to trust everybody else around her before she trusted herself, no longer blessed with the sight of her surroundings or the joy of painting. Although she had been stuck like that for almost two years, it never got easier to deal with.

She huffed under her breath, shaking her head.

Kelly sighed. "He will be here soon, can you try to be nice?"

Millie smiled sarcastically. "I'll try."

Finn stood in front of the house, tapping his foot nervously as he stared up at his new surroundings. The house was made of a worn type of brick, an old grey color with a bright blue front door with flowers drawn around it, slightly wobbly as if they painted on by a young child. He sighed under his breath, remembering the lecture in his head from his mouth about being polite and understanding about the girl that he was about to meet. He was nervous, not really good at making his own friends with his own anxiety and school work-filled routine. When the door opened and Kelly Brown invited him with a friendly yet almost scared smile, he didn't know what to expect as he walked in. The house was small and quaint with several pictures of a young girl, lively brown eyes and shining golden brown hair clinging onto her parents legs, grinning at the camera with slightly wonky teeth. He grinned at the picture, frowning slightly when he noticed the empty chair in the room, glancing back at the woman behind him that was watching with slightly awkward hands.
