LAST HEART

Amor was woken up from her slumber the following morning and by her painful and engorged breasts. She needed to pump but her breast pumps were a few feet away from her. The doctor had ordered that she rest and not move atleast until the next day.

' Caleb!'

She called out to her husband several times and he did not respond. Caleb was a light sleeper and would have heard her after the second Caleb. Panic set in and she grabbed on the call bell and in minutes the nurses were in her room.

' Misses Zulu.'

In tears or had blocked out everything that was happening around her and could only concentrate on her unconscious husband. The nurse called her two ore times before she responded.

' Misses Zulu I need you to calm down and tell me if your husband has an existing health problems.'

For a second her mind went blank and she could not register what the nurse was talking about. The nurse looked at her waiting for a reply as her eyes darted back and forth between her husband, who was being resucitated and the nurse.

' Misses Zulu look at me. Look at me and take a deep breath in.......... yes and now let it out.'

The nurse who was now seated next to her on the hospital bed and rubbing in circular movements on her back to calm her shock. She repeated her words and actions till she was visibly much calmer and asked her question again.

' Uhm, he is currently on chemotherapy for colon cancer. He has no other chronic illness and is allergic to fish and penicillin.'

The nurse jotted down everything she said and kept her occupied by the time she was done with the questions, Caleb was on a stretcher with tubes on him on oxygen. Tears choked her but she had to keep calm for his and her sake.

' Hey baby momma!!'

Busi and Maddison celebrated upon entering her room and she immediately burst into tears. Shocking the two women. Busi placed the flowers and gifts on the locker and sat down next to her with Maddison on the opposite side.

' Babe what's wrong? We're sorry if we upset you.'

Busi said thinking it was the pregnancy hormones still messing with her. As Caleb had told them that the delivery was successful .

' Amor please talk to us You're scarring us. What's wrong?'

Maddison said rubbing her back they sat trying the best to calm her down then she started hiccuping inbetween the tears.  Busi and Maddi tried to console her but failed, she was inconsolable. She cried so much she began having hiccups.

' Babe do you need us to call Caleb? Where is Caleb?!'

Amor did not answer but just burst into more tears causing the women to come to their own conclusions. Amor was so hysterical she could not say anything. All she could think about was her husband's weak lifeless body and all the tubes they had in him.

' I can't lose him Busi. I can't. He's all I have. If I lose him I will die.'
