"A young Pureblood has killed a Hunter, and all we're doing is nothing? He attacked four more and you're going to protect him?"

Cross stared back at Yagari Toga, a small sigh escaping him.

"It was reported that Hiro was attacked. And the four he 'attacked' also provoked him first." Cross placed both hands on the desk, folding them as he looked up at his old friend. "There is a law about provoking Vampires that aren't on the list, Yagari. And that rule was broken."

Yagari frowned deeply. "...the Association is not going to like your nose in their business." His sigh was deep and he sounded tired.

Cross smiled. "Well, it is the truth. And that always seems to piss others off."

Yagari silently nodded in agreement.

"Hopefully, they won't torture the tiny bloodsucker."

Cross furrowed his eyebrows, shaking his head as he fixed his glasses. "That's why I'm having you check in on him."

Hiro thought prison would be...worse.

Other than the occasional glare from the guard and the annoying yelling, it was just like living with his uncle.

He sat on the wooden bench, peering up at the small window. His uniform had gotten a bit dirty, but he was fine.

The sun poured in through the tiny square window. It had been a couple of hours since he'd been here, and he had (shamefully) fallen asleep a few times.

He should be scared to be in here, with people who want nothing more than to kill him.

The Vampires in the cells he passed on his way here was something he would never forget. The way they screeched and howled, aching for blood, hunger hitting them like a cold brick. It was a haunting sight, watching them reach for him.

He knew what that felt like, memories flashing across his mind.

No one was scarier than his uncle.

He grimaced at the thought, pulling his knees up towards his chest and huddling in the corner. Would they try to execute him? Let him defend himself by explaining what happened? Or keep him locked away in here forever?

He sighed, his head falling onto his knees.

Why is it that no matter where he went...he was still locked up somewhere?

Whether it be with his parents, hidden from the world.

With his uncle, stolen and locked away.

Or with the hunters, who were probably going to try and kill him.

It angered him to no end. It was frustrating to have a repetitive moment in his life happen over and over again, just in different ways.

Stagnated and stuck.

He suddenly felt cold, a chill sweeping through his cell.

"...Hmm?" He asked, a distant voice calling for him.

It was sweet and firm, but he couldn't make it out.

There was a scoff that interrupted his thoughts.

He turned his attention to the door. It opened, and Hiro raised both eyebrows.

"Pirate..?"

Yagari frowned at the name.

"I mean-teacher?" Hiro said quickly.

He walked inside, standing in front of Hiro. Blue and red eyes widened in surprise when a hand was placed on his head, tilting his head side to side.

"...doesn't look like they hurt ya too bad. Our weapons leave terrible bruises." He said a little too proudly. "Cross will be happy they didn't kill you yet."

Hiro frowned, eyebrows furrowing.

Yagari stiffened at his expression, sharing a frown. "Don't act innocent. Be honest, you aren't a fan of hunters. No Vampire is."

"Why haven't they killed me yet?"

Toga raised an eyebrow.

"I hurt those hunters...and killed one of them." Hiro sighed. "The hunter I killed-he was going to kill me no matter what I did. But none of them care. No one wants to hear my side." He paused, and his slowly dips down, lowering in defeat. "...And if they really want me dead, why are they waiting so long?"

Toga scoffed silently, scowling at him. He scratched his head in annoyance. "Isn't that what your kind is about? You killed him so you could live. That's all there is to it."

Hiro grimaced.

"...But you spared those other hunters...twice. And didn't kill them." Toga shrugged slightly. "I call that a lesson learned."

It was silent as Hiro sucked his teeth, eyebrows furrowing.

"I shouldn't never left..." he trailed off, stopping himself from going any further.

No...he would never regret seeing Kaname again.

His little sister.

Meeting his friends.

Going to school.

Seeing and trying news things...

He was tired of waiting. He kept his eyes closed, a bitter smile growing on his face.

Yagari stared at him in confusion, a small grimace on his face. This kid...wasn't like any Pureblood he met before.

Yagari left the room with a slow turn of the door. Hiro listened to the keys being jumbled as the door was locked again.

Yagari had no words of reassurance for him. Nothing to make him feel better about what he did.

Because that's what they were: Monsters.

And one change of heart, one sense of humanity and mercy...wouldn't change an entire horde of evil.
