Chapter 82.2: 1995, Ruiz
"Its almost been ten minutes but I don't want to go."
"When is the next time you can call?"
"Hmm, well we can call twice per day for ten minutes each."
"Why only twice?"
"I don't know. This phone is supposed to be for emergencies, I guess."
"It is an emergency, we're talking."
"Haha, yeah." He started giggling, getting out of control. I wanted him to talk, we only had a limited time, but hearing him laugh was so good. Just too good. He let out a small cough, maybe to control himself. "If I don't get off now then Mandy might get on my ass. You remember her? That lady who started yelling at us and made us go to the cafeteria?"
"Why don't you hang up, wait a minute, then call me back for ten more minutes?"
"Haha, it doesn't work that way. Maybe I can call you after dinner? Like seven o' clock? What do you think?"
"Okay. I'll wait by the phone, then."
"Believe me, I will be, too."
"I love you." I sighed into the phone.
"I love you, too, Ruiz."
"I want to kiss you through the phone."
"Unfortunately technology is not that advanced. Maybe in ten years."
"Yeah, maybe."
He sighed heavily, and I knew what was coming. I didn't want to hear him say it, but it was necessary. Sadly. "I gotta go now, Ruiz. But I'll call you at seven. I promise."
"Okay. I love you. Again. I love you again." I was smiling so hard my cheeks hurt but I didn't care.
"I love you, too, again and again."
"Good-bye for now."
"Adiós, mi amor," he said in a growly, sexy way.
With that he hung up but oh my god why'd he have to say it like that? Jesus, my heart was pumping. My body was in the air, had to be. He had to have planned that. He knew what saying stuff like that did to me. I hung the phone up and turned around on the wall, leaned against it with my back to support myself.
"You two sure made up."
My brain snapped out of my lovely feeling, but I smiled seeing Miss Cha Cha in the kitchen with me. I hadn't even realized she was there. A blush rose to my cheek quickly, realizing what we'd been saying to each other on the phone with her probably overhearing. But Ambrose had been basically in public, too, so that was okay.
"Sorry," I said, smiling. I couldn't help it.
"Why? You're in love. I love that you're in love. Never apologize."
"Oh. Yeah."
"You want to go to the grocery store with me? I have to pick up some stuff for dinner. I was thinking pork chops. What do you think? I can serve apple sauce with cinnamon in it with it, maybe some salad? What would you want in a salad?"
Dinner. Ambrose was going to call me after dinner. I was smiling before I realized.
"What?" She laughed, already picking up her big yellow purse from the kitchen table.
"Nothing. Yeah, I can go to the grocery store with you. I wanted to pick up some Wheat Thins, too. I was thinking about it."
"You like Wheat Thins? I didn't know that."
