After what felt like forever, we finally pulled into dad's driveway.
I stretched as I climbed out of the car. "That was a long drive," I muttered Ace hopped out behind me, grabbing his backpack.
I opened the trunk and started pulling out my bags.
"Mom, are you coming inside to say goodbye?"
She nodded.
"Of course."
She grabbed one of my bags while I carried the rest into the house.
Walking through the front door felt familiar.
It had only been a week since we'd visited Dad, but this time was different.
This time...
We were staying.
I carried my bags upstairs to my bedroom.
Mom followed behind me and set the last suitcase beside the window.
I looked around my room and smiled.
At Mom's house, my room had dark blue walls.
Here, they were a soft light blue.
Blue had always been my favorite color, so I loved both rooms.
A knock sounded at my bedroom door.
"Come in."
The door opened, and Dad stepped inside with a smile.
"Hey, kiddo."
I smiled and hugged him.
"Hey, Dad."
"How've you been?"
"Good."
"How are the horses?"
"They're doing great," he replied. "I just finished feeding them, so I'm done working for the day."
He looked over at Mom.
For a second...
Neither of them said anything.
Then Mom smiled.
"Hi."
"Hi," Dad answered softly.
They stood there talking about work, life, and how things had been going.
It almost felt like...
They were pretending everything was normal.
Not wanting to interrupt them, I quietly slipped out of the room.
I had a feeling I knew where Ace would be.
Sure enough, his bedroom door was open.
He was busy unpacking his clothes.
I knocked gently on the doorframe.
"Can I come in?"
He smiled and nodded.
"Yep."
I sat down on the edge of his bed.
"So..."
"Are you ready for school, buddy?"
His face lit up.
"Yeah!"
"I can't wait to make friends and meet new people."
I laughed.
"Wow."
"You already have your whole plan figured out."
He grinned proudly.
"What about you?"
I looked down at the floor.
"I'm excited..."
"But I'll miss my friends."
"Kate and Zoey?"
I nodded.
"Yeah."
"I'll miss them a lot."
Ace smiled at me.
"You'll make new friends."
"I hope so."
"You will."
I smiled back.
"How about we make a deal?"
"What kind of deal?"
"If you make one new friend..."
"I'll make one too."
Ace held out his hand.
"You're on."
I shook it.
"Bring it on."
We both laughed.
For the first time since leaving home...
Everything didn't feel quite so scary anymore.
