"What am I supposed to do, Maya?"
I sat on the edge of my bed and sighed.
"I'm seventeen, and I still don't have a mate."
Maya looked up from where she was sitting on the floor.
"You'll find him."
I shook my head.
"Mom and Dad keep introducing me to different guys, but none of them are my type."
I buried my face in my hands.
"What if I never find my mate?"
Maya frowned.
"You will."
"How am I supposed to become a great leader of the pack someday if I don't even have a mate?"
She smiled gently.
"School starts soon."
I looked at her.
"So?"
"You could meet him there."
I laughed.
"How do you know that? Most of the boys there aren't even my type."
She tilted her head.
"What exactly is your type?"
I hesitated.
"I want someone who's a full wolf."
Maya blinked.
"Wait..."
"You only want a mate who's a full werewolf?"
I nodded.
"Yeah."
"Mom and Dad keep introducing me to humans who became werewolves."
I crossed my arms.
"I was born a werewolf."
"So why can't my mate be the same?"
Maya thought for a moment.
"Ben wasn't born a werewolf."
"I know."
"And I don't care."
She smiled.
"I love him because he's Ben."
Not because he was born a wolf.
I looked down at my hands.
"I guess..."
"I just want someone who's strong, fast, understands our world... and will always be there for me."
Maya sat beside me.
"Leanna..."
"You don't need a full-blooded werewolf to become a great leader."
I sighed.
"I know."
"It's just..."
"All my friends have full-wolf mates."
She smiled kindly.
"You don't have to live your life like your friends."
"You need to be yourself."
She nudged my shoulder.
"And when you find your mate, it should be because you love him..."
"Not because he fits some perfect picture in your head."
I sat quietly, thinking about what she'd said.
Maybe...
Maybe I'd been focusing on the wrong things.
I let out a slow breath.
"I feel kind of bad now."
"For what?"
"For judging the guys Mom and Dad introduced me to before I even got to know them."
Maya smiled.
"It's okay."
"So..."
I laughed a little.
"Maybe I'll give one of them a chance."
"Or maybe," Maya said with a grin, "you'll meet someone around the time school starts."
"Maybe."
She stood up dramatically.
"And then you won't be... mate-less."
I stared at her.
"...Mate-less?"
She shrugged.
"It sounded better in my head."
I couldn't help laughing.
Maya joined in until we were both laughing so hard our stomachs hurt.
She always knew exactly what to say to make me smile.
And in that moment...
I realized how lucky I was to have her as my little sister.
