School didn't start until Tuesday, and I couldn't wait.
I missed everyone so much.
I couldn't wait to see Alex and the others again.
I had just gotten back from my trip to Vancouver. It was for family stuff, but honestly... it wasn't all bad.
I did have some fun memories.
There was just one thing I wished I could forget.
The run.
I had gone out by myself, enjoying the woods, when a wolf appeared.
I didn't know who he was.
He was older than me, with black fur and hazel eyes.
Before I could react, he attacked.
His claws caught my face.
Pain shot through me.
It hurt more than anything I had ever felt before.
I managed to get away, but the damage was already done.
The worst part was...
I couldn't let anyone see.
When I shifted into my wolf form, the scar was still there.
It still hurt.
But when I was human, the scar didn't show.
At least there was that.
I stared at myself in the mirror.
I hated the way it looked.
A scar across my face.
I looked different.
Ugly.
I didn't want Alex or anyone else to see me like this.
I knew what would happen when they found out I was back.
They would ask me to go for a run.
They always did.
And I didn't want them looking at me, wondering what happened.
I didn't want them asking questions.
So for now...
I would hide it.
Just a little longer.
I changed the subject in my mind and started getting ready for school.
I picked out my outfit for Tuesday.
Jeans.
A light blue shirt.
My favorite boots.
I smiled a little.
At least I could look normal.
"Lilly!"
Mom called from downstairs.
"Can you come help with dinner?"
"Coming!"
I walked into the kitchen and saw Mom preparing food.
"What are we making?"
"Fish and chips," she said.
"Your dad will be happy."
I smiled.
Dad was always busy in his workshop.
He was either building something, fixing a car, or taking something apart just to put it back together.
I loved watching him work.
"Mom?"
"Yeah, dear?"
"Can I bake a cake?"
She looked over and smiled.
"Of course. What kind?"
"Carrot cake."
"With cream on top?"
I nodded.
"Ooh, that sounds good."
She laughed.
"You can bake. I'm going to check on your dad."
"Okay."
Mom walked out of the kitchen and disappeared down the hall.
I grabbed the bowls, measuring cups, and everything I needed.
Baking always helped me relax.
I poured in the cake mix first and started stirring.
Then I stopped.
"Oh, I forgot the eggs."
I grabbed three eggs from the fridge and cracked them into the bowl.
After mixing everything together, I poured the batter into a cake pan and placed it in the oven.
A few minutes later, Mom walked back into the kitchen.
"It smells like heaven in here."
She smiled.
"I can't wait to try your cake."
I smiled back.
"Me too."
I set the timer and looked around the kitchen.
For a moment, everything felt normal.
But deep down...
I knew Tuesday was coming.
And when I saw Alex and the others again...
I didn't know how long I could keep my secret.
