"Ugh..."
I flopped backward onto the couch.
"School starts on Tuesday."
I groaned.
"I wish summer could last forever."
Just then, someone knocked on the front door.
"I'll get it!"
I opened the door and smiled.
"Oh, hey, Alex!"
"It's been a while."
"How've you been?"
He smiled back.
"I'm good."
"How about you?"
"I'm good too."
"I was actually just about to go for a run."
I tilted my head.
"You want to come?"
"Sure," he said. "Sounds fun."
As we started walking toward the woods, I remembered something.
"Oh!"
"Happy birthday!"
He laughed.
"Thanks."
"So..." I teased.
"You're Alpha now?"
He nodded proudly.
"Yep."
"I'm officially the Alpha of the pack."
"Wow."
"What's it like?"
"Is it cool... or boring?"
Alex grinned.
"It's pretty cool."
"I'm the boss now."
"I get to tell everyone what to do."
I laughed.
"Well... not your friends."
"You definitely can't tell me what to do."
He rolled his eyes.
"Yeah, yeah... I know."
We reached the edge of the woods and changed into our wolf forms.
A few seconds later, I stood on four paws.
My fur was a soft gray, and my bright blue eyes reflected the afternoon sunlight.
Alex's black wolf stood beside me, his yellow eyes glowing.
I lowered my front legs into a playful stance.
"Race you!"
Alex smirked.
"You're on."
I took off through the trees as fast as I could.
I could hear Alex's paws pounding the ground close behind me.
He was almost beside me.
I pushed myself harder.
A small creek appeared ahead.
Without slowing down, I leaped over it.
I landed perfectly and skidded to a stop.
Alex crossed a second later.
I turned around with a huge grin.
"Ha!"
"I win!"
"I'm still faster than you."
Alex laughed.
"I know."
"You always beat me."
We shifted back into our human forms and sat on a fallen log to catch our breath.
After a minute, Alex grew quiet.
"Nicole..."
"Yeah?"
"Do you think I'll find my mate soon?"
I looked over at him.
"I don't know."
"You might meet her at school."
"Or maybe somewhere around town."
I smiled.
"But I know you'll find her eventually."
He nodded.
"I hope so."
I laughed.
"Well..."
"I'm still looking for mine too."
"So until then..."
"We can be the two mate-less friends."
Alex laughed.
"Deal."
He stood up and brushed the dirt off his jeans.
"I should get going."
"Thanks for the run."
"It was fun."
"See you at school Tuesday?"
I smiled.
"Of course."
"Why wouldn't I be there?"
He laughed.
"Fair point."
"See you Tuesday
He waved before jogging back toward home.
I stayed in my wolf form for a few more minutes, enjoying the breeze through my fur.
Then I shifted back, got dressed, and headed home.
Tuesday was the first day of school.
Something told me...
