I glanced at the clock on the dashboard.
"Oh no..."
"We're late!"
I pressed the gas a little harder as we headed toward Ace's school.
A few minutes later, I pulled into the drop-off lane.
I looked over at my little brother.
"Okay, buddy."
"Have a great first day."
He smiled and grabbed his backpack.
"You too, Jade."
"I'll meet you back here after school."
"Sounds good."
He climbed out of the car, waved one last time, and ran toward the school entrance.
I smiled.
Then I looked at the time again.
"Oh my gosh..."
"I'm going to be so late."
I quickly drove to Haven High, pulled into the student parking lot, grabbed my backpack, and hurried inside.
The school was huge.
Way bigger than my old one.
I pulled my timetable out of my pocket.
First Period – English
"Great..."
"Now where is English?"
The warning bell rang.
Panic started to set in.
I hurried down the hallway, trying to read the classroom numbers.
Then—
Bump!
I ran straight into someone.
"Oh!"
"I'm so sorry!"
I quickly bent down to help him pick up the books he'd dropped.
"It's my fault."
"I'm running really late."
He smiled.
"Let me guess."
"You're new?"
I laughed nervously.
"Is it that obvious?"
"A little."
He smiled again.
"I'm Alex."
"I'm Jade."
"So..."
"What class are you trying to find?"
"English."
His eyes lit up.
"Perfect."
"I'm heading there too."
"You can follow me."
"Really?"
"That would be amazing."
We started walking together.
I glanced over at him.
Wow...
He was really cute.
Actually...
He was incredibly handsome.
Why is he so hot?
Before I could stop staring, he looked over at me and smiled.
"So..."
"Do you want to have lunch with me and my friends today?"
I tried to act calm.
"Sure."
"That sounds great."
Inside, I was screaming.
A cute guy just asked me to have lunch with him!
Alex smiled.
"Awesome."
A few moments later, we reached the classroom.
"Here we are."
He opened the door for me.
"Ladies first."
I smiled.
"Thanks."
The moment I stepped inside, every pair of eyes turned toward me.
Great...
No pressure.
The teacher smiled warmly.
"Class, settle down."
"We have a new student today."
She looked at me.
"Would you like to introduce yourself?"
I nodded.
"I'm Jade Lake."
"I just moved here."
"Welcome to Haven High, Jade," the teacher said.
"Everyone, let's make her feel at home."
A few students smiled and waved.
I smiled back before taking the empty seat beside a blonde girl.
She turned toward me with a friendly smile.
"Hi."
"I'm Lilly."
"Nice to meet you."
"Welcome to Haven High."
"Thanks."
"It's nice to meet you too."
"So..."
"What do you think of the school so far?"
"I've only been here for about five minutes."
We both laughed.
"Fair enough."
"I like it here."
"Most of my friends are in my classes."
"Oh."
"That's nice."
She looked at my timetable.
"Can I see?"
"Sure."
She looked it over and smiled.
"Good news."
"You have a couple of classes with me."
"Really?"
I smiled.
"That's a relief."
"And you have one with my friend Maya too."
"Who's Maya?"
"She's one of my best friends."
"Don't worry."
"She's really nice."
"I think you two will get along."
"I hope so."
"You will."
She handed my timetable back.
"Oh!"
"We also have our last class together."
She grinned.
"So..."
"Want to be friends?"
I couldn't help smiling.
"I'd love that."
"Thanks."
"No problem."
She winked, making both of us laugh.
I leaned back in my chair.
Maybe moving here wasn't going to be so bad after all.
In less than an hour...
I'd already met a really cute guy...
And made my first friend.
Maybe this first day was going to turn out better than I ever imagined.
