After I finished getting dressed, I headed downstairs with my backpack.
Maya was already in the kitchen.
The moment she saw me, she smiled.
"Morning!"
"Morning."
"Would you like me to make you a lunch for school?" she asked.
I smiled.
"Really?"
"That would be amazing."
"Thank you."
"And thanks again for letting me borrow your clothes."
"I really like this outfit."
Maya smiled.
"You're welcome."
"It looks good on you."
She started making my lunch while I went back upstairs to straighten the guest room.
I made the bed, folded the blanket, and made sure everything looked neat.
Just as I finished, there was another knock on the door.
Alex stepped inside.
"How are you feeling?"
I laughed.
"You've asked me that like... three times already."
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"I know."
"I just want to make sure you're okay."
I smiled.
"I promise."
"I'm fine."
"Okay."
He smiled before heading back downstairs.
A few minutes later, I grabbed my backpack and joined everyone in the kitchen.
Maya handed me my lunch.
"There you go."
"Thanks."
I grabbed an apple and sat down at the table.
I hadn't realized how hungry I was until I started eating.
While everyone finished getting ready, I checked the time on my phone.
8:05 a.m.
My eyes widened.
"Guys!"
"We should probably leave."
"It's already five after eight."
Everyone looked at the clock.
"Oh!"
Alex grabbed his keys.
"Let's go."
We hurried outside.
I climbed into the car with my backpack while everyone else piled in.
A few minutes later, we were on our way to Haven High.
Maya smiled at me from the seat beside me.
"So..."
"What do you think of the art classes here?"
I smiled.
"I really like them."
"They're different from my old school."
"How so?" Lilly asked.
"Back at my old school, we mostly painted."
"Here..."
"You get to make all kinds of different things."
"I think it's really fun."
Everyone smiled.
"We're glad you like it here," Maya said.
I smiled back.
"So am I."
Before long, Alex pulled into the school parking lot.
"We're here," he announced.
We all grabbed our backpacks and climbed out of the car.
Just before we reached the front doors, everyone started heading in different directions.
"I've got math," Leanna said.
"I'll see you guys at lunch."
"I've got science," Lilly added.
Maya looked at me and smiled.
"Looks like it's just us."
"We've got English together."
"Perfect," I said.
The two of us walked into the school side by side.
For the first time since moving...
Walking into school didn't feel nearly as scary.
I wasn't walking in alone anymore.
I had friends waiting for me.
