Chapter FITHTEEN

The bell rang, signaling the end of English.
Lilly smiled as she packed up her books.
"I can't wait to see Maya."
I looked over at her.
"What do you mean?"
"Didn't you see her over summer break?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"I was away on a family trip all summer."
"Oh."
I smiled.
"Do you think she'll like me?"
Lilly laughed.
"Of course she will."
"Maya's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet."
"She's funny, caring, and a little crazy."
"You two are going to get along great."
"I hope you're right."
"I know I am."
We both laughed as we walked down the hallway.
"So, what class do we have now?" I asked.
"Art."
My face lit up.
"Seriously?"
"I love art!"
Lilly grinned.
"I knew you'd be excited."
A few moments later, we reached the classroom.
As we walked through the doorway—
BAM!
Someone crashed right into me.
"Oof!"
I landed on the floor.
"Ouch..."
"Lilly!"
A girl with long brown hair laughed as she hugged Lilly.
"I missed you!"
"I missed you too!" Lilly laughed.
Then the girl looked down at me.
Her smile disappeared.
"Oh my gosh!"
"I'm so sorry!"
She quickly helped me to my feet.
"I'm Maya."
I smiled.
"It's okay."
"I'm Jade."
"It's nice to meet you."
"You too."
Lilly couldn't stop laughing.
"Maya."
"You literally knocked her over."
"I know!" Maya laughed.
"I wasn't paying attention."
"I just saw you and got excited."
I laughed too.
"It's fine."
At least now I'll never forget meeting you."
The three of us sat together.
Before long, we were already laughing like we'd known each other for years.
I smiled.
"It's nice making friends this quickly."
Maya looked at me.
"What do you mean?"
"I thought it would take forever to make friends at a new school."
Lilly smiled.
"Not here."
"Most people are really nice."
Maya nodded.
"Well..."
"Almost everyone."
I looked at her curiously.
"What do you mean?"
She leaned closer.
"There's one girl you should probably stay away from."
"Oh?"
"Her name's Brooke."
"I'll keep that in mind."
Before anyone could say anything else, the lunch bell rang.
Lilly stood up.
"Come on."
"Let's go eat."
I smiled.
"I'd love to..."
"But I already promised someone I'd have lunch with them."
Maya raised an eyebrow.
"Oh?"
"Who?"
I smiled without thinking.
"Alex."
Both Lilly and Maya burst out laughing.
"Oh!"
"We know Alex."
"He's one of our best friends."
"Really?"
"Yep."
Maya smiled.
"Come on."
"We'll all eat together."
We walked into the cafeteria.
My jaw dropped.
It was huge.
There were rows of tables everywhere.
Students filled almost every seat.
There was even a second level overlooking the cafeteria.
"Wow..."
"This place is amazing."
We found Alex and the others sitting together and joined them.
After a few minutes, I stood up.
"I'm going to use the restroom."
"I'll be right back."
"No problem," Lilly said.
As soon as I disappeared around the corner, the table went quiet.
Leanna looked at Alex.
"Alex..."
"I think she has powers."
He frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Leanna lowered her voice.
"I can feel it."
"She has a wolf inside her."
"But..."
"I don't think she's turned yet."
Alex looked toward the hallway where Jade had disappeared.
"Do you think she even knows?"
Leanna slowly shook her head.
"I don't."
Maya crossed her arms.
"So..."
"How do we find out?"
Alex thought for a moment.
"When she gets back..."
"I'll ask her if she believes werewolves are real."
Everyone looked at him.
None of them knew...
The answer to that one question was about to change everything.
