"What?! You don't know where she is?" I bellowed in anger. "Nik stop it. John is too upset to deal with your antics right now." Rebekah yelled her voice softening at the end. "John?" That's when I noticed the young boy with dirty blonde hair and blue eyes in my sister's arms.  My son.  He wiped his eyes as he looked up at me.

"I'm sorry. Hello my name is-" "I know who you are!" The boy said his eyes lighting up as he wiped the remaining moisture on his cheeks. "You're my dad. Mommy said you were protecting us by not coming to visit but I'm happy we can visit you!" He said happily. He certainly has his mother's attitude and spirit. But he looked like a mirror image of me as a child.

"She said that did she?" I asked unsure as to why Alice would make me sound like a hero to our son rather than tell him the truth. "Where is your mommy John?" Rebekah asked kindly as she set the young boy down. He looked no older than six or seven but his eyes told him that he had far more knowledge than he was letting on.

"I promised my mommy not to tell anyone but my daddy in private." John said firmly making Bekah laugh brightly. I smiled down at the child and led him into my study but not before telling Elijah to watch the door himself to ensure no one would listen in on the conversation.

"So my dear boy where is your mother?" I asked my eyes darkening slightly at the thought of seeing her again. Alice may not have my trust but she still has my heart. "Mommy is down by the river. She was crying when she forced me to leave. People were coming for her. Bad people."

Anger surged through me as I ran from the mansion without stopping to explain to my siblings or respond to cries from my servants. I found the edge of the river where Alice stood her nose bleeding badly indicating her over use of magic. Her red hair hung to her face while she stood wearing faded jeans and a purple v-neck, a dagger in her hand standing in a strange fighting stance. Her grey eyes look dull and she looked nearly defeated but I knew her well enough to know she'd fight till the last breathe.

Two werewolves remained standing circling her. "That's quite enough of that." I said stepping forward. The wolves turned and froze in shock. "So the hybrid does have a mate after all." The older of the two said. "Yes he does and you have clearly seen what she can do. Now leave." I growled baring my fangs as my eyes turned gold. The two nodded and slowly backed away before breaking into a run.

"Nik..." Relief was in her voice but it didn't last long as her eyes closed her body crumpling in exhaustion. I caught Alice and lifted her up carrying her back to the mansion. I was greeted by my sister and older brother. John ran over to his mother and held her hand. "Mommy...." He whispered softly. Alice's hand gripped her son's and her eyes opened slightly. "Hello John. Be a good boy over the next few days okay?" She mumbled before coughing violently. "Yes mommy." He said sadly as he watched me carry his mother up the stairs.

I laid Alice down in my bed before taking a damp towel Jessabelle had prepared. I used it to wipe away the the blood that covered her face. When her face was clean I noticed her eyes were open half way. She reached up and brushed my cheek with her knuckles. I lifted my hand up and clasped her hand pressing it against my cheek. "I should kill you for what you did to me Alice." I said coldly. "But because my sister begged of me not to. You will live in this house with your family raising your son."

She nodded. She started to sit up but I stopped her. "You idiot you will drain your strength." She shook her head. "I want to see him. He worries just like I do." Her tired voice sparked something inside me. "Alright then but off to bed after love. You need your rest." I said walking outside the room and closing the door. I leaned against the door wiping my moist eyes. Why am I crying? Why do I care that she is okay? Why am I relieved?

"Is mommy okay?" I looked up to see John standing with Rebekah his brow furrowed in worry. "Yes she wants to see you little one so come now." I said beckoning the young hybrid forward. We entered the room and John ran over to his mother climbing on the bed and snuggling into her side. "Hello John. How are you doing?" "Good mommy. I like daddy and auntie too! Uncle Elijah is too serious though." John said making me smile. "I think so too." She was trying to sound stronger than she really was but based on the sound of her breathing she was struggling to speak.

"Are you and daddy going to live together again?" Alice looked at me for a moment giving me a brief smile before nodding to her son. "Yes I believe we will. Now go rest little one. Get up early tomorrow and we will go exploring with your daddy." Alice whispered knowing I could hear her all too well. "Really?!" Alice hushed her son and nodded smiling brightly at her most treasured trophy. "Now give momma and daddy a kiss before going off to bed." John leaned up and kissed his mother's cheek then ran over to me kissing my hand before disappearing with Rebekah.

"He's so much like you it warms my heart." I turned to Alice. "So full of life. Loving music and art. He's exactly like you were as a child." I smiled at her for the first time since she entered the mansion. "Well that light in his eyes. That's all you." Her skin was pale and her eyes looked more lively after speaking to our son.

"So why did you name him John?" "John Niklaus Michaelson. John was my brother's name. It means mercy." Alice said smiling as she looked outside the window where the rain pelted the glass. "You really should rest because tomorrow you explain yourself but for now you need some sleep." I said walking around the bed. "You say you don't care yet you worry so much for my well being?" She asked chuckling as I assisted her getting comfortable on the bed. "You're the mother of my child you'd bloody better be healthy."

"I can read your mind Nik and I know you are confused and scared to trust me again which I understand but all I wanted to do was protect our son from growing up to-" "Be like me?" She shook her head. "To be damaged the way we were as children." I stared at Alice. "Did you continue to write music?" She smiled. "Did you continue to paint?" I nodded. "I couldn't stop after you left." "Me neither." I looked up at her her eyes full of sadness and pain.

"Right I'll leave you to rest." I turned to leave when I felt a hand grip my arm. "Please don't leave me." I nodded without thinking and removed my jacket, shirt and shoes slipping into bed beside the red head wrapping my arms around her. She rested her head on my chest over my heart. "Float down, like autumn leaves, Hush now, Close your eyes before the sleep, And your miles away, And yesterday you were here with me." Alice sang sweetly causing my grip on her waist to tighten.

"I love you." She murmered before drifting off to sleep. I couldn't sleep as I thought of how likely it was she was telling the truth. Was she truly trying to protect her child or did she never love me to begin with?
