Snowy Serpents

The snow slides in sidewinders across the cement,
Growing as the warmth of summer and fall ferments
And the wind turns cold and stubborn like a harsh word
The birds take the sun's golden rays with them
As they leave and now the sky is only white
Everything is now a void, a black hole that isn't dark
The stars have been chased away by the spirits of icy hounds that sprint
With the frozen breeze, and the moon is just a stain on the sky
That has been washed away a million times
The trees jut into the air like snapshots of lightning strikes without electricity
But in our homes, the fire dances on a wooden stage,
Sending its energy billowing into the sky,
Our pillows of fluff are so weak but they protect us like the strongest armor
From the frost outside that stares in from our windows
Like the strangers we were warned about as kids,
Threatening harm and numbness
But we don't dare let them in
Except to go outside for more wood to fuel the fire
And even then
We are careful not to let the snowy serpents
Wrap around our feet.
