Playing baseball all of my life and going to church regularly, I have come to understand that Jesus would have probably played baseball. There are so many clues that lead me to believe this thought.
I would like to make my argument at this time and hopefully the truth will reveal itself. The first argument would be the number of disciples that followed Jesus was twelve. Twelve people can make up a team of baseball players. Nine in the field and you could have three substitutes. You could also have a first and third base coach and one manager staying in the dugout.
This game also helps explain the church that Jesus left behind. The universal church(the catholic church) can be compared to the universal game of baseball. Just like a catholic mass, the game can be played all over the world. You do not have to speak the language in foreign lands to follow the mass in different parts of the world. You do not have to speak the language to play the game with others in different parts of the world. Baseball is universally understood, just as the mass is universally understood. There is an order to the mass, just like there is an order to baseball. The mass teaches us about the life and times of Jesus, the game teaches us about life. The church teaches about the life of Jesus an the power of sacrificing yourself for others. The game of baseball has a sacrifice bunt, which allows you to advance another player by your selflessness. The life of Jesus tells us to love your enemy; the game of baseball is the only sport that the defense has the ball. The life of Jesus is the way, the truth, the life: In the game of baseball there is only one way to run when you hit the ball, there is a truth to the game which includes three strikes and you are out. The life of a baseball player is tough, you will fail more times than you succeed at bat. There are slumps that keep you humble and moments of redemption.
Needless to say, if you had to explain how it all began, it could go like this: Jesus came through town collecting baseball players. He wanted to teach them how to play this great game. He not only told them about it, he showed them through great plays and miraculous catches. After the last pregame meal, he told Peter that he would be the first head coach of the game because he understood the concepts of the game better than the rest. Despite the fact that he struck out by denying him three times, he was the guy that he would leave the universal game too. Before the game, he took parables and had a round of infield, everyone could better understand the game.So here it was ,the stage was set the game between good and evil, Jesus was up to bat and had the bases loaded. Everyone expected him to hit a home-run, but instead, he laid down a sacrifice bunt. That sacrifice bunt, was a grand slam over evil that changed the world and made him the MVP of the world series. He then went off to the Hall of fame. Leaving his paracletes behind.
The game spread and others wanted to learn how to play the game. The original team went throughout the land teaching and showing people how to play the game. They taught them that when you hit the ball, you have to run this WAY, towards first. They taught them that the TRUTH was three strikes and you are out. The LIFE of a baseball player was tough at times, but they handled it with a grace through the power of forgiveness after an error. The game wanted to get everyone on the team and you would be treated like a teammate by all those who played the game.
The game began to spread throughout the country -side for hundreds of years. Unfortunately with people, power and corruption found its' way in to the game. Everyone wanted to be the head coach. They were doing their best to destroy the pure game that Jesus left behind to his disciples. So, a group of people got together, led by Martin Luther, and said they did not think the game was being played correctly. So the Protested!( Protestant reformation).
There is a lot of good that has come out of the protest, but unfortunately we have divided into competitive teams trying to destroy each other. We were all suppose to be on the same team, but that is people for you.
So that is about it. I hope this explains how it all started. Although people got involved and took the game in the wrong direction through the corruption of the game. The purity of the game has stood the test of time. Whatever brings people together in the name of love of the game is a good thing.
