As an administrator of the second largest school in the state of Alabama, you deal with a lot of drama. Relationships gone badly because of a betrayal of trust. That is what inspired this next thought.
The human body is made up of 65% fluid. When I think of fluid, I think of water. When I think of water, I think of bodies of water. When I think of bodies of water, I think of oceans. When I think of oceans, I think of tides. Students can experience high tides, which mean good or great days and low tides, which for no reason at all, means they just feel depressed, thoughtful or alone. I am no expert, but I know tides have something to do with the moon. Therefore, if the moon can have an effect on a large body of water, I would think it could have something to do with us as human bodies of fluid.
It has been my experience, that behavior definitely changes on a full moon, just ask your local police officer. Look even closer at the properties of fluid, it is unstable. There are chances, when dealing with the high school student and their lack of frontal lobe development, that things will not be as solid as you would like them to be.
There is a chance, that the student may feel like they are lost at sea and just want to get out of the tidal wave of emotions. They may feel like they are alone in a little boat trying to row to shore and get on stable ground, while the sea is raging.
The motivation behind this philosophy is to help students not only deal with themselves, but also deal with others. The nation's suicide rate is on the rise among high school students. I wanted students to know, although they may be dealing with a raging sea of emotions and they are struggling to get to shore, or they may feel sad or depressed, to hang in there!
The message here is to be patient, not only with yourself, but also with the people around you. Relationships are tough to hold onto, you have to determine who is a good friend and who is not. When you are making your judgments, realize that you may never know what they may be going through. They may be having a low tide moment. Therefore, roll with your tides as well as your friends. Roll Tide Roll! ( I said nothing about hormones)
