Chapter 41

Fayelynn

One afternoon in early August, I got off the phone and I knew what I had to do. Grabbing my keys off the counter, I left a quick note for Danny on the counter.

Going to Haley's, rehearsal today. Be back at 6.

No doubt, he'll blow a gasket when he sees it. I hadn't sung once for the past month and a half, having lost the passion for it. And rarely leaving the house also meant not going to rehearsal or the shows. I still worked but when I could, I took paper work and finance stuff to do for Christy.

Did I really want to do this? Did I want to give up everything?

"Here, let me help you with that," I sprinted across to the elderly woman who was struggling to carry groceries into her house, and after I set them down on her dining table, noticing the copy of the Mancheston Mariner on the dining table and gulp.

"Thank you dear, you have a good heart. You don't deserve what that sick boy did to you," she says and I take a few breathes.

"Thank you ma'am, have a nice day," my voice comes out shaky and I bolt out of her house, almost sprinting to Haley's yard. Knocking on her door, I paced around until she answered, her face lighting with shock.

"Fayelynn?"

"Um, hi."

"Okay, so, you have the songs right?" I ask one final time, avoiding the stares I got from the people in the café, no doubt they were for me.

"Yes, Fayelynn. For the one hundredth time, we have the songs," Ringo says rolling his eyes and playing with the drumsticks. The summer air was warm, but there was a cool breeze to cool it down, luckily. After a few minutes I turned around and fiddled with the microphone, not sure how to not look at the crowd.

Enjoy it Fayelynn, this is it.

Davis does the introduction and we dive into the first few songs, including The Fray, Haley's Paramour choice, Ringo's Beetles choice and J.C One Direction song. Finally my turn comes in, the big finale. J.C and Haley do the Keyboard and piano intros and Davis starts the first verse.

In the light of the sun
is there anyone? Oh, it has begun
Oh dear, you look so lost
your eyes are red, the tears are shed
this world you must have crossed, you said

And like no other song, I poured my heart and soul into this verse.

You don't know me
and you don't even care, oh yeah
And you said, you don't know me
and you don't wear my chains, oh yeah

Davis went into the next verse, just like we had practiced and my turn came again, making eye contact with Danny.

You said you don't know me
and you don't even care, oh yeah
Well you said you don't know me
and you don't wear my chains, oh yeah

I think that line was made for this town. Gathering for breath, I know that this is my final blow, the confirmation in my heart and soul.

She said I think I'll go to Boston
I think I'll start a new life
I think I'll start it over
Where no one knows my name

I'll get out of California
I'm tired of the weather
I think I'll get a lover
and fly 'em out to Spain

Oh yeah and I think I'll go to Boston
I think that I was tired
I think I need a new town
to leave this all behind
