Chapter 40 The Devil and The Angel

Fayelynn

Days passed as blurs, but I was numb again anyway and it didn't matter anymore. I barely left the house, seeing as going to a public place was out of the option. The morning I saw that newspaper with my face on the front cover I almost cried, but I just shrugged it off.

It's a small town, secrets don't exist here.

Blake's arraignment was July 31, a scorching hot, humid, dreary day in which I was dressed in black and full sleeves, having to sit in a non-air conditioned courtroom for a few hours. I didn't have to testify, having given a statement but I did have to be in court. Danny had given a statement too and anyways, he had confessed to it all. It was an open and shut case, but my nerves were wracked anyway. I fidgeted in the seat before they brought him in, wringing my hands tightly before Danny grabbed them and kissed my fingers.

"It'll be okay, don't worry," I tried over and over again to chant that in my head but they didn't help at all.

"Bailiff, please bring in the defendant." The judge was a nice, kind fair lady and I trusted her judgment but just like everybody else in this town, her eyes only held one thing for me. Pity.

Blake entered the room and I immediately quivered with fear. His gaze was trained on me and his steely cruel eyes showed no remorse. I could feel myself shake and gripped onto Danny's hand even tighter, counting down the minutes until it was over.

"How does the defendant plead?"

"Guilty, your honor," his lawyer replied

"What has the jury decided?" A man brings up a slip of paper and hands it to the judge. She opens and I bit my lip until I felt the metallic taste of blood.

"We the jury, find Blake Wesley guilty of Rape, attempted murder, and breaking and entering. He is hereby charged with 15-20 years in prison with chance of parole in 10 years," The words send a wave of relief through me and I exhale a breath I didn't even know I was holding. Cheers and clapping goes through my side of the courtroom, whereas the Wesley family shouts and yells outrageously.

"Order! Order, or I will have you all arrested for Contempt Of Court!" The judge threatens and bangs her gravel.

I always wondered if they actually did that

"My decision is final. Bailiff, take him away."

"You sick slut!" He yells out, "Everybody knows you wanted it! This is not over, bitch! Mark your calendar, 10 years."

You will not give him the satisfaction of him seeing you cry.

"Just you wait!"

You will not give him the satisfaction.

You will not give him the satisfaction!

Instead, I held my head high and shook my head and walked out of the courtroom.

You will never give him that satisfaction.

I took a few deep breathes, leaned against the columns outside the courtroom and tried to avoid the not-so-subtle looks from so passing towns people.

"Hey," Danny came up to me, "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, yeah. I'm fine, it was just a little... Overwhelming."

"It's over now, it's all gone," he reassured me but I chuckled out a dry laugh and released my hair from its bun, running through it.

"No, Danny. It's not, it never will be for me," I answer and he sighs, knowing what I mean.
