chapter 18
"Jennie Kim, explain yourself!" Her mother burst into her bedroom, waking the girl from her nap in an instant.
Jennie sat up groggily and rubbed her eyes, glancing at her mother and wondering what she was being blamed for this time.
"How selfish can you be that you only think about yourself in this house?" The woman went on, an angry look on her face.
"What are you talking about?" She glanced at the time on her phone seeing it was 6pm.
She must've taken a nap after attempting to read with the loud noise from downstairs. When that didn't work out, she decided to just take a nap before work, knowing she slept best with noise anyway.
"Ah, no I'm late for work!" She realized and hopped out of bed. She was already wearing leggings from that morning and scrambled to find her Walmart's vest in her closet.
"No. Right now, you are not going anywhere." Her mother's cold voice made her stop in her search.
Jennie turned around and a chill went down her spine as her mother grabbed her arm and led her down the stairs. She struggled to get out of the tight hold, but when she entered the kitchen she had stopped in her tracks.
The foul smell that flooded the air was the first thing she noticed. The second were her cookies, that were completely black, along with the tray, which she made before the party.
She had forgotten to take them out from the distraction, and due to the loud music no probably heard the alarm going off either.
"It was Jisoo who found the cookies burning, and this!" She held a red cup in her hand that had some sort of liquid inside. "Are you doing alcohol?"
Jennie choked on her spit at the accusation.
"Alcohol? Of course not, I'm underage." Jennie frowned, offended that she would think that. Her mother looked inside the cup and shoved it in her daughters face. "This shows otherwise."
"Well, it wasn't me!" Jennie furrowed her eyebrows and she felt her heart drop.
Why would Jisoo even try to frame her for her own doing? She already knew how much her parents didn't like her. Did Jisoo hate her that much?
"Who else could it have been then, Jisoo?" Her mother snorted at the thought of her doing anything wrong, and that was what made Jennie snap. She yanked her arm out of her hold.
"Maybe it was Jisoo! Is it so hard for you to believe that she isn't the perfect daughter you make her out to be?" Jennie tried so hard to get her out of this imaginary hierarchy she held for the other twin.
With pursed lips, her mother shook her head. "She's a lot better than you."
Jennie already knew that, but it hurt a lot more hearing it come from her mother's mouth. "She's a manipulative liar - "
A loud sound came from the room and it took Jennie a moment to come back to her senses. She placed her hand on her cheek and looked up at her mother in fear.
"Go to work, I don't want to see you right now." Her mother dismissed coldly.
Jennie angrily sped out of the room and went upstairs. She shut the door, being careful not to slam it knowing it would only make this worst.
Frustrated, she picked up the pillow from her bed and screamed into it. She felt like pulling her hair out, or just using the blade from - no.
She promised herself she wouldn't get that low again. Instead, she did the safer option and went over to her closed, pulling out the familiar black box that was hidden in the back.
She opened the box, taking out one of her antidepressant and schizophrenic bottles that were made for moments like these. There were only 4 pills left in the container she held, but she had enough extras that she didn't have to worry about running out.
She probably twisted the top, and put it back in the box. She hid it back neatly in her closed, making sure it wasn't visible. She knew her sister knew about them, and just in case, she put them in a different spot.
After taking one of the pills, she thee it back in the box. She knew her sister knew about them, so just in case, she put them in a different spot. She put it on the very top shelf of her closet where old scarfs, hats and such were. Once satisfied with its place, she closed the door.
After putting on her work uniform, she grabbed an extra shirt and left her room.
Both of her parents and sister were sitting beside each other at the kitchen counter, talking lowly among each other as if they had something to hide.
She saw the uncomfortable look on Jisoo's expression as she looked at the computer on the counter.
"What happened to being a family, huh? It's like I'm nothing but a burden to all of you." Jennie stressed without thinking.
She noticed how none of them even bothered to spare her a glance when she entered the room.
"I know how much you wished you had just one normal daughter, okay? I do too."
Without looking at either of them, she headed into her car and drove away from the toxic home behind her with heavy shoulders.
