chapter 28

Jennie's family basked in the attention they received at church the next morning, and Jennie absolutely loathed it. The way her parents held themselves as if they were the best.

Maybe in others' eyes, they would just seem like parents proud of their daughters, but it was so obvious that it wasn't about that. Rather than giving both daughters the spotlight, they shined it on themselves, and Jisoo.

They just stole Jennie's credit, and gave it away to her sister. A few people after the mass was over would talk to them personally, asking questions like how did they find the recipe, or how long it took them to prepare it all.

"It's homemade." Jisoo would reply, followed by a: "It took hours, but with all of our hard work, we did it."

Jennie made it all by herself, with a recipe online of course. She wasn't a professional baker, it would've been impossible to come up with a recipe in one freaking day.

Claiming that she made it herself would be straight up copyright, and that was wrong. But her family didn't seem to think the same.

"Yeah, we came up with the recipe all by ourselves." Jennie just rolled her eyes and stood off to the side a little.

The Smith family that they were talking to was a small family of three. Jennie could see the regret on the father, Eric Smith for complimenting her family. The man asked one question, and it turned into a bragging session.

Jennie had enough of it and fixed her sweater neatly. "I'll be in the car." She said quietly and walked away on her own.

She'd seen the looks her family received, either from envy or annoyance. As figured, the car was locked when she got there. She didn't bother going back for the key, and just leaned on the side of the car, staring up at the sky.

The sun was hidden by the clouds, but she could still vaguely see the light that was pushing through them, wanting to be seen... felt.

The weather was starting to get much colder. They had a much longer summer than usual in Lakewood, which pushed the cold for so long.

Thanksgiving was coming up, which was something Jennie really looked forward to. Her family would drive up to her cousins house, all the way in Hoboken.

It was the only time Jennie and her sister have ever been in the opposite town. Jennie's parents held a disliking for the other family, aka, their own siblings.

Jennie, her parents and sister went to visit them every Thanksgiving since it was something her grandmother always demanded. At least once a year, the entire family would come together, and so they chose Thanksgiving.

It always had to be at Aunt Kathleen's house, (who everyone called Kathy for short) which was Hoboken, since her home was the biggest.

Thanksgiving was only four days away, on Thursday, November 26th. She would see her many cousins she hadn't seen for so long. Jennie now realized how much her parent's kept them isolated, and yet Jisoo didn't seem to mind.

Jennie was taken out of her own thoughts when she saw Troye walking up to her. "Jisoo?"

He stood there in brown slacks, a light blue vest shirt, and large pointed black shoes. Jennie couldn't help but think: Wow, did he fit the stereotypes.

"No, Jennie." She shook her head with a tight lipped smile.

"Oh, my apologies." He apologized and leaned against the car with Jennie.

She wanted to say something, but decided against it.

"She's beautiful isn't she?" Troye said longingly and adjusted his glasses.

Jennie just looked at him with a dull look, and then glanced towards her sister. Jisoo was talking, stretching as her chest pushed up and then dropped when she exhaled.

The wind pushed her hair in her eyes, which she flicked away with a single finger and tucked it behind her ears. She didn't see the eyes analyzing her from afar.

She sighed and brought herself off the car, and turned to face the boy. "You like her don't you?" Troye looked up at her startled, as if he wasn't acting extremely obvious. "What? No! I just - I..." He sighed.

"I don't want to be the one to say this... but I'm going to say it anyway." Jennie began, and was kind of proud of herself for how straight forward it was. "Jisoo is..."

"You don't have to tell me. I already know. She's way out of my league." Troye frowned. "In her eyes, I'm just a high schooler."

Jennie was going to say something along the lines of 'he deserved better,' knowing the type of person her sister was. But to hear the guy say something like that left her confused.

She blinked up at him. "How do you know that?"

"That's what told me. She literally said, 'I'm out of your league. You're just a high schooler.'" Troye said, a bit embarrassed, a blush spreading over his cheeks.

"Did she just say it out of the random or along with something else?"

"Well..." he trailed off and looked around nervously.

"Well what?" She looked at him with furrowed eyes.

"I kinda begged her - "

"Jennie!" She looked up and saw Jisoo walking towards them. Jennie wanted to roll her eyes but contained herself. She was rolling her eyes a whole lot lately.

"I'm glad to see you guys becoming friends!" Jisoo said a bit enthusiastically, and Jennie could see right through her.

She just looked at her sister flatly, while Troye stilled in place.

"Hi.." He said shyly and looked at her through his glasses, but was bluntly ignored as Jisoo turned to her parents and pressed the unlock button on the key.

She pulled open the back door and peeked at the guy one last time. "Bye Tory."

Jennie just looked at the door angrily. How could she be so immature and rude? Jennie was going to apologize to the guy on her behalf, but he was already walking away from the car with his head low.

Jennie shook her head and got in the back seat after Jisoo. "Why are you so mean to him?" Jennie got into the car.

"He won't stop annoying me. Let him be your problem." She shrugged as if she didn't just hear herself talk.

Jennie sighed and laid back in the seat. She didn't really care if Jisoo was mean to her, but to other people, strangers, who saw some good in her, it pushed Jennie's buttons.

One day, just one day she'll realize her mistake. Luckily, that day was sooner than later.
