chapter 2

Jennie had a feeling that Sunday morning that something...interesting was going to happen. The church was lively as usual, but it was a little off.

It became more obvious when the pastor often stumbled over his words, and when the old ladies who always sang couldn't stop gossiping every few seconds.

Sure it was normal to happen once or twice but throughout the entire mass. It was as if everyone was distracted by something.

When Jennie and her family went home, it was her mother who slammed her phone on the kitchen table. Jennie internally sighed, wondering what it was that she did wrong this time. Her twin sister, Jisoo had an opposite expression and went to comfort her mother.

Jennie subtly rolled her eyes at the sight of Jisoo sucking up to her mother. She caressed her hair gently, "Mommy, what's wrong?"

The mother sighed and looked at her two kids.

"Street art," was all she said.Jisoo looked at her confused. "Street art?"

"I just checked the news on my phone. A building - some building on 24th street was covered with a date... november 22nd, 21st was it? All over the wall! Those street artists are coming into our town thinking they can do whatever they want."

24th street. It was the exact street that divided both towns from each other. Lakewood was where Jennie's family lived. It was quiet, and peaceful, and much more reserved than Hoboken, the opposite.

The people there were outspoken, and far too aggressive, at least that's what they were seen as. Usually, Hoboken knew their place and hardly ever came into the other side of town.

"Mommy, do you think some Hoboken kids are gonna come here again?" Jennie eyed the way Jisoo was all over their mom, her hands comfortably running up and down her arms.

The woman sighed and shook her head. "I don't know, but I don't want you guys around people like them."

"Of course we won't. Monica and Caterina were telling me how Edward's older cousin lives in Hoboken and that all over that city is bad. Full of careless people that are like... filthy too."

Hoboken wasn't a new topic when it came to the people of Lakewood. They despised the opposite town and made their hatred for them known. It was the same vice versa.

"Don't worry, nothing is going to happen to my baby." Jennie looked down upon hearing the condoling tone her mother used.

It often felt like she was third wheeling when around them, which is why she always tended to stray away from them in case of moments like these.

She decided to head upstairs, knowing it would be best to catch up on assignments she didn't have to finish.

"Jennie." Her mother called right before she left the room. Jennie turned around and glanced at the two.

"Yes, mother?"

The woman gave her a look, "Jisoo's been telling me about that girl you've been hanging out with, what was her name - "

"Addison," Jisoo finished for her with a sly smile at her lips.

Jennie clenched her teeth, her eyes flickering between her mother and her twin sister. "What about Addison."

The woman shook her head and walked around the counter. "Jennie, what did I tell you about talking to people like them."

Jennie could feel her blood boiling every second and she knew if she looked at Jisoo, she would be wearing a smug look, so she avoided her. She tried to keep her anger down out of respect, but still ended up mumbling: "People like what?"

Her mother stood straighter. "Her brother. Isn't he a... homosexual?"

Jennie couldn't look at her mother, instead she kept her gaze on the floor. "And they still have the nerve to show up at our church! You know, when my girls from work told me about Charli and how she raises a gay son, I immediately cut her off, them too!"

That explained why Addison looked so down last Friday, and instead of confiding in her friend, Addison chose to just keep to herself. It upset Jennie, but she didn't want to pressure her into saying what was wrong. Now it made sense.

Jennie listened to the rest of her mother's rant on how she is no longer allowed to associate with the D'amelio family any longer. She had no choice but to nod her head, and she walked upstairs to her room.

It was only 10am, considering how early she tended to wake up for church. According to her mother, the earlier equals the more dedication it shows that you have for the Lord. And so they stuck to 7:30am mass every Sunday morning.

Opening up her laptop, she started working on her assignments that were due the next day. She laid on her bed, propped up on her pillows.

Her laptop sat on her lap and beside it was her phone playing soft lofi music that usually helped her study. She wasn't allowed to listen to anything other than that, classical and gospel.

As her mother said, pop and rap music is the devils music, filled with cursing, money and sexual references. Everything else, her mother found too weird or loud.

A little while later she heard a knock on her door. Pausing the music, she saw the time was already 2pm and shouted for whoever was there to come in.

Jisoo appeared at the door, taking in the plain white room with a slight scrunch on her face. "You should paint this or something. It's boring."

Jennie kept quiet, knowing that it would only bring satisfaction to Jisoo since she knew Jennie wasn't allowed to paint her room.

In comparison to Jisoo's pretty pink castle, Jennie apparently never earned "room privileges" like Jisoo when she got straight A's on her transcript.

Jennie wasn't the best when it came to academics, yet Jisoo shined in it. Basked in it, and flaunted it.

And so Jisoo scoffed slightly in amusement before turning her narrowed eyes on her sister. "Mom said you have to eat since you came straight to this... hole.. after we came back from church. Honestly, you should just skip this one."

Jisoo spun on her heels and shut the door, leaving the girl all alone in her thoughts. Jennie glanced down at her stomach, lifting the laptop a bit so she could see it clearer. Although she was leaned over, she didn't like the sight of the rolls on her stomach.

She knew she was slim, but when Jisoo, who could pass for a model, constantly commented on her figure, she started to believe what she heard. She agreed that she could wait a few more hours, she wasn't that hungry anyway.
