chapter 34

"We like you... the both of us," the pink haired boy said, staring at Jennie with a look in his eyes.

The blue haired one stood beside him and leant his arm on Jimin's shoulder. "But it's obvious that you can't be with us at the same time."

Jennie felt her heart stammering in her chest, and she couldn't concentrate on anything other than the way they were looking at her.

Jimin took a step closer to her. "And we don't want to give you an ultimatum to choose one of us."

"We just wanted to let you know that you have a special place in our heart." Taehyung smiled close-lipped, but his words were as honest as the warm glint in his eyes.

"It doesn't mean we're not gonna fight for you," Jimin responded and glanced up at Taehyung with a smirk.

Jennie felt pressured under the attention of the two gorgeous men in front of her, and she thought back to the events that led up to this moment...

It was a few days after Thanksgiving. Jennie hadn't seen either boys for the past week, and considering it was Tuesday night, she was hoping to see them sometime before her night shift ended.

They kept in touch through messages, checking in on each other occasionally, but she hadn't physically seen them in person. They weren't present even in class or in the lunchroom.

Jennie asked where they went, and it was Taehyung who responded saying they just took a break for a few days to watch over Melanie.

Apparently, Hobi and Suga went on a holiday together for the break, and they were still in Atlanta doing He knows what.

"What happened to those guys that are always with you?" Jennie looked up and saw her coworker now standing beside her register, a curious look on his face.

Jennie figured he must've been talking about the colorful boys, since they did tend to accompany her for a few minutes.

Jennie just shrugged and robbed her lips together anxiously. She felt put on the spot with the way Namjoon was eyeing her.

"I guess it started here and ended here huh?" Namjoon joked, but then he saw the way Jennie's face fell. "Hey, I'm only joking."

She smiled sadly and stared at the register. "They're probably just busy." She said in excuse.

Namjoon nodded and cleared his throat. "I just... I remembered the first time I saw they were here, a few weeks ago. I thought they were weird at first but you seemed to like them, so..."

Jennie saw an expression in his eyes, one she didn't seem very fond of. They looked sincere, and doubtful, as if showing that he felt sorry or worried for the girl. She just exhaled shakily and rubbed her shaking hands down her Walmart vest.

"Are you sure they're any good for you?" He asked sincerely, and Jennie could see where this conversation was leading to.

"Of course. They're not bad people." She defended, and stared at the taller boy with a guarded look.

"Then where are they?" He shot back. Namjoon looked at her doubtfully, and began to walk away.

Forget him. Jennie told herself in her head. She knew the guys much more than Namjoon did, so his opinion was biased.

As she said, they were probably busy. They didn't have to be there every single shift of hers. It wasn't necessary. It was totally okay.

But then she sighed. It did kind of start to feel like the boys were avoiding her. She didn't want to think like that, but sometimes it felt too good to be true. Maybe she was just over thinking. She really wanted to see them. She had images of them imprinted in her mind.

The way Jimin would smile so prettily, showing his slightly crooked teeth and his eyes would crinkle and vanish. And his pretty laugh, how contagious and enchanting it was hearing the sugary sound come from him.

Then she thought of Taehyung, and how he would subconsciously smile at Jimin or Melanie when he thought no one was looking. And the way his hair so neatly fell against his forehead whenever he wore a headband, displaying his sharp and flawless features.

There was no doubt in Jennie's mind that the two boys seemed to enter her life like a storm, one that was no way near sailing freely.

It felt like they just boarded the deck, and although the boat shook a few times, they managed to make it. But they were still docked, and Jennie wanted the boat to sail. She really did.

She shook the sea metaphors from out of her mind and at that time by came back to the present, her shift was officially over.

She signed out her register, making sure it was set for the next worker to use it. Once done, she walked out of the store, her eyes trained on the ground and her heart feeling heavy.

She tried to keep her mind clear. At least she'd be going home on time for the first time in a while. She wouldn't have to make an excuse again on how she was held back from traffic, or that she had no choice but to work a few hours longer.

Jennie knew her parents were starting to catch on, but she just wanted to be happy, and not always dependent on the pills. The boys became her new drug; her antidepressants, her artificial happiness. But nothing about them was artificial, they were real.

Whenever she would feel upset, she'd look back at the pictures she took on her phone, or even text one of the boys to pass time.

They didn't know about her depression, and she didn't really want them to. She found it pathetic that she even had to take them since there were many people her age just living life as it should be, rather than trapped under her parents.

She was walking through the automatic doors, and heard the familiar chirps of grasshoppers and other natural things that tended to transpire once it became night. Despite it being late, there were a few people hanging around the front of the building, hanging out.

Jennie already heard their talking from inside the market, but it was much louder when she went outside.

The noise seemed to dull down a bit when she walked out, but she ignored it and just kept walking. That was, until she felt a hand on her shoulder, stopping her in place and turning around.

"Ahh, look here." She heard a voice from behind her, right by her ear. "It's Kim's b—h."
