The air is frigid and cold, causing the small body to shiver. The girl sat on the steps of the patio leading out to her back yard, her green eyes staring out at starry night above. The cold wind dances past her, pushing a short strand of blonde hair into her face. The girl tucks the rebellious strand behind her ear, her body shivering.

"You're going to catch a cold." The blonde jumps slightly, surprised by the sudden voice that broke the silence she was living in. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to frighten you." The natural red haired android apologized, cupping her hands in front of her. The ten year old remains quiet, still gazing at the stars. "May I join you?" Devon glances at the female android for a moment before looking back at the dark sky, nodding her head slightly.

The android smooths her black and white dress down then takes a seat on the step beside the little girl. Devon wraps her arms around her knees that are tucked into her chest, her chin resting on her knees as green eyes fixate on a dirt patch in the yard that never seems to want to grow any grass.

It's silent between the two, the only noise audible is a few chirps from a cricket or the train far in the distance. "Why does he hate me?" Devon's voice breaks the silence and she could feel the androids gaze on her. "He doesn't hate you-"

"Then why does he hit me?" Devon cuts off her statement, shifting her eyes onto the android, them brimming with tears. The fresh bruise forming on her cheek stings. Evelyn opens her mouth to speak but she soon closes it. It becomes quiet again and Devon scoffs as she looks away front he android, not expecting her to speak. Of course she wouldn't, she's just a stupid android. Her uncles stupid creation that he made so he wouldn't have to take care of her or take her in.

"It's not right what your father is doing." Devon turns her gaze back to Evelyn. The android seemed to be thinking as she speaks, her LED spinning yellow as she looks up at the stars. "And I'm sorry that you have to deal with that." She finishes, looking over at the girl. The blonde looks away quickly, to try and hide the tears that are ready to pour from her eyes.

"I wish mom was here." Devon whispers, tightening her arms around her legs. "If she was here I wouldn't be so sad and dad wouldn't be so mean." The girl releases a shaky breath that turns into a fog around her, a tear sliding down her red cheek. "I wish I made him happy. Maybe if I was a better daughter he'd love me..."

A comforting hand is placed on her shoulder, causing Devon to shift her green onto the android that was looking at her intently, her body fully turned towards her now. "You are a great daughter." Evelyn begins, her blueish green eyes looking into Devon's green that she shares with the man that is drunkenly passed out on the floor in his bedroom.

"You are a great person, Devon Cassidy. I have been fortunate enough to be here with you and I can tell you that you are one of the most interesting humans I have ever met." A smile tugs at Devon's lips and Evelyn smiles as well.

"Really?" The girl sniffs, wiping away her tears with back of her hand. "Yes." The android answers simply with a nod of her head. "You're pretty cool, Evelyn." Devon smiles at the android, feeling warm suddenly. That coldness in her heart beginning to warm up slightly. It wasn't easy at first when Evelyn first came around. Devon wasn't exactly happy with her uncle for leaving her behind, to only put an android in the house to care for her instead of taking her somewhere safe, somewhere with him.

The girl always decided to take that frustration out on Evelyn. Being cold towards her, not speaking to her or trying to avoid her all together. Her anger at her uncle clouded her judgment, not allowing her to see all the things Evelyn has done for her. Helping her with her school work, trying to play with her, cooking her dinner, taking food to her when her dad locked her in her bedroom for hours. Evelyn wasn't the problem here, she's an innocent android just doing her job.

"Thank you." Evelyn thanks her, causing the young girl to shake away from her thoughts, green eyes focusing on the woman beside her. She nods her head slightly, turning her eyes back to gaze up at the stars. Evelyn follows suit, looking at the bright dots in the dark sky.

Devon always did this after her dad would abuse her. She'd come out here and look up to vast sky, wishing one day she could just disappear. Disappear from existence forever and live among the stars. She wonders if the place her mom is, is better where she is now. These shouldn't be thoughts a ten year old should have but she can't help the dark thoughts that try to suffocate her and take over her brain.

Only a few days ago they had a funeral for her mom, only a few days ago she lost the woman that gave birth to her, the woman that loved her wholeheartedly. She also lost her father a few days ago, not physically but the version of him she grew up knowing, the loving man that would take her to get ice cream and play games with her. He's now replaced with the monster that leaves marks on her skin and permanent scars on her young, fragile heart.

Suddenly, Devon wraps her arms around the android's waist, hugging her tightly. Evelyn was taken aback by this, not expecting the affection at all. This was very different for the android, Devon never really showing any kind of affection towards her before. Eventually, she wraps her arms around the blonde, hugging her back. Devon cries into the androids chest and Evelyn holds her tightly, rubbing a hand through her short blonde hair. As the red head holds the little girl closer, she makes a silent vow that from now, moving forward, she would protect this little girl no matter what.

Even if it meant her own life.

Hope you all are doing okay, I'll see you next week :)

The next chapter will be a lot longer I promise.
