Split Up

Undisclosed Location

Steve, Sam and I step into our run down motel room. Tired. It's been a long day for all of us.

"I could've sworn I saw him at the farmers market." I sigh rubbing a hand down my face tiredly.

"I believe you but there was a lot of people. We're close though. I can feel it." Steve nods as I take a seat on a bed.

"Steve's right. I think we're close to finding him." Sam says.

I get my note pad out and jot a few notes down when Steve's phone dings but I don't look up as I continue to write things that can help us find Bucky.

"It's Tony. They need us." Steve says making me stop for a moment before I continue to write.

"Have a safe flight." I say and he stops.

"I said us. They need us. As in the three of us." Steve tells me.

"Steve we're so close in finding Bucky I can't leave now." I shake my head.

"Come on J.D. they say it's important. Regarding HYDRA." Steve tells me and I purse my lips then sigh.

"You go." I tell him.

"What? I'm not leaving you behind." He says in an obvious tone and I stand up from the bed.

"Steve you go and I'll catch up with you tomorrow." I tell him.

"So you want to split up? We've never- we don't spilt up. We're a team." He tells me and I place a hand on his shoulder.

"It's just for one day. If Bucky's here. I'm bringing him back safe." I say determined.

"Then I'm staying too. I'm not leaving my best friend behind." Steve retorts.

"Steve, they need back up and we know HYDRA, they'll need the help. You and Wilson go. I'll be fine." I tell him more seriously and he sighs stepping out of my grip.

"...Fine. I'll go but Sam, can you stay with Sarge?" He turns to Sam.

"You don't need to ask. I'll stay." Sam says simply with a shrug.

"I don't need a babysitter." I shake my head.

"Well if we're splitting up-

"We're not splitting up forever. If we don't find him by tomorrow at noon. We'll head back and meet up with you." I tell him and he rolls his eyes slightly.

"Well I don't want you to be alone so Sam is going to stay and help you look." Steve says packing his bag.

"Fine, fine, whatever. But you text me when you get there safe. And if you really need more back up call me...and we'll be there." I nod and he nods back.

"So when do you-

I'm interrupted by knocks on our room door.

Sam raises an eyebrow as he goes to check the peep whole in the door. I grab my shield invade it was unwanted company.

"It's a guy in a suit." He says and he he opens it slightly.

"Hi um, I'm Happy Hogan. Head of security for Tony Stark. I'm here for Steve Rogers and Joesph Barnes." The man says making Sam open the door all the way.

"How the hell did you find us?" I ask with a raised eyebrow.

"Joey!" Steve scolds making me roll my eyes setting my shield down.

"And It's just me. Barnes is, not coming." Steve tells Happy as he slings his bag over his shoulder.

"Does Tony know?" Happy asks.

"If he knows or not I don't care." I sigh grabbing my note pad.

Steve walks over to me and we share a hug.

"Text me any updates you have about Buck." He says.

"Text me when you get there safe." I tell him as we separate.

"It's weird. This is the first time we'll be apart since...we woke up." He chuckles and he's right. Since we woke up in this time we've been attached by the hip.

"Don't worry kid. We'll meet up tomorrow." I ruffle his hair and he whines slightly fixing it.

"Now go. Can't keep 'em waiting." I tell him and he nods.

He bids Sam goodbye and he walks out the door with Happy. As the door closes I sigh taking a seat on the bed.

Sam and I were sitting on the rooftop of a building eating some fast food looking out at the town looking for any sign of Bucky even though it's night time. It's been kind of quiet. I've never been alone with Sam and I've been my usual quiet self. Making small talk here and there with him.

"You know, I thought you would've jumped at the chance to go back." He brings up chewing on his burger.

"Eh, I think I'm okay where I am now." I say looking through the people below.

"I just thought you would've been excited to see Natasha again." He comments and I stop slightly.

"You haven't talked to her in like what? A few months-

"A year. It's been a year." I say softly looking down at my burger in my hands.

"Damn." He mumbles.

"I've been looking for Buck. She's been on the run. I think." I shrug trying to ignore the pang in my heart.

"That's why I thought at this opportunity you would be packing your bag as soon as the words flew out of Steve's mouth." He says stuffing some fries in his mouth.

"I would like to see her again. I just wish it wasn't for a mission more like...

"A date?" He questions and I shrug feeling my face get hot.

"You never told us how that date went. Gonna tell me now?" He asks.

"No, I don't think I will." I respond.

Sam fights back a smile.

"Well hopefully you'll see her tomorrow. Then you can ask her out again." He says and I think about it.

"It's been a year. I don't think she's interested anymore." I sigh taking a sip of my soda.

"Don't sell yourself short. I think you still got a shot." He tells me and I don't respond as I take another bite of my burger.

We continue to eat in silence, looking out at the town.

"Can I ask you something, Sarge?" Sam then asks breaking the silence and I nod with a shrug.

"A year ago. You made a call on me. Bet your chips on me. Including me in your mission. Your team. Why?" He asks turning to me but I don't look back as my gaze is still looking down at the town.

"We were outnumbered. We needed all the help we could get. Lucky for us you had a resume, and wings." I smirk and he chuckles.

"That and..you're a good kid. You got grit...you remind me of me when I was in the army. I'm fond of you Wilson. Just don't tell anyone I said that." I tell him.

Sam looks ahead, out at the town. Feeling more confident and happy at Sarge's words, taking them to heart.

"Thank you." He nods.

"Don't mention it. Literally."

"Roger that."
