"Sometimes the stars just aren't aligned in our favour." He let out a heavy sigh, the weight of the world resting on his shoulders as he looked at her. He can't bear to see the tears falling silently down her cheeks, to hear the shuddering breaths she took as her world crumbled underneath her feet. "We can't keep doing this to each other. It's not healthy."
Healthy? What did he care about healthy when he was the one who kept pulling her back in with his honey laced words and subtle touches? When did he begin to care about such things when he was the one who originally couldn't let go?
"I have to let you go." He didn't look at her, opting to look out at sea and listened to the crashing of waves.
This was their spot. The place that held a lot of their memories because this was where they met; it seemed like a lifetime ago now but she can remember the smile he wore when he was pushed in her direction. This was where they used to run away to be together, their own little slice of heaven that was in plain sight but also allowed the world to melt away. She would listen to his voice for hours; he could have spoken in another language and she would have listened to him forever. They would watch for shooting stars and wish for forever and that was what he promised – forever.
"Sometimes forever is a moment." She mumbled; her voice as broken as her heart. "I was a fool to think that this meant anything."
"It didn't." He admitted, stabbing her with his invisible knife one last time. "It was nothing more than a fleeting kiss that turned into more when it should have remained as one night." She nodded in agreement. She allowed him to see her underneath all the masks and instead of pushing him away, she let him in and this was what she got for that – he left her anyway but she's having to deal with it instead of being ignorant to the pain.
"We need to stop." She took a deep breath, pushing all the tears off her face and forcing herself to stand straighter even though she's dying inside. "This is for the best."
"It's for the better." He agreed, looking back at the woman he claimed to love and seeing the mask fall back into place because she was cutting him out with the knife that she metaphorically wields herself. It's easier for her to pretend, to act like the last few years mean absolutely nothing rather than to spend her nights crying over him.
With a deep breath, closing her eyes and taking a deep inhale, exhale, she opened them again and that's when he saw that he was completely pushed out of her mind. "Goodbye." She said, voice void of the emotion that tore it apart earlier.
"Goodbye." He said. He watched her turn on her heel and leave, leaving everything they had where it all began and with a final sigh – he did the same.
