Present Day - Shawn's POV
Our most recent victim looks at me with bone chilling fear as her forest green eyes pierce my insides with a display of fear I've become all too familiar with.
I'm helping the EMT's push her on the gurney into the unit at Toronto General. She won't let me touch her, and I'm sure for very obvious reasons, but I always try to be as kind and gentle as possible when dealing with victims.
"20 year old Jane Doe found at the park off Adelaide Street. A near by jogger stopped when they saw her wrapped in a blanket poorly attempted to be covered by leaves and called 911." My partner Brian tells the nurses that meet us inside the unit as we follow them down the hall.
Even though the ambulance usually transports our victims to Toronto General; often times a detective or two will escort the vehicle to the hospital and provide as much information as possible to the medical staff from a police stand point so they know what calls to make, and establish a line of communication for each case.
I'm internally excited to be on shift today because as soon as we make it to the unit I see my beautiful best friend Camila. She's wearing her brunette hair in beach waves and her chocolate brown eyes and gorgeous, warm smile greet us as we arrive. God she's so damn beautiful.. However I can't focus on that right now as I help Brian and the EMT's get Jane Doe into a room.
"Detective Mendes, Detective Craigen; we'll take it from here. Anything else we should know?" One of the nurses asks. Brian glares at me out of the corner of his eye with a look that says "I got this," so I follow the EMT's out to meet Camila at the desk to help her bag Jane Does valuables.
"Hi Miss Cabello, how are you doing this evening?" I ask.
"Honestly I'm ok. How are you Detective?" She asks as she grabs a big bag to place Jane Doe's items in.
This is our thing. She always checks on me after we bring a case in. She knows what I do is not easy and her constant checking up on me might seem clingy to most, but I never mind it. Camila just knows what I need and when I need it. Best friends usually do, but she's so special to me, I don't think I could ever be annoyed by her "overbearing" concern.
"I'm doing fine Mila, this case was just one of the harder ones to see in awhile. It makes me want to find the bastard that did this to her that much quicker so I can personally rip his balls off!" I can feel my face getting red with anger. Camila reaches forward and takes my hand that's laying on the counter and gives it a light squeeze. "You'll get the bad guys, you always do. Just stay focused." She says giving my hand another tighter squeeze accompanied by a reassuring smile.
"God Camilita I don't know what I do without you sometimes!" I smile at her.
"Well I do. You'd be able to actually focus on your work and not my girlfriend Detective!"
Andy. God I hate that guy. He walks up behind Camila forcefully removing her hand from mine.
"What's your problem Andy? We were just talking!" Camila glares at him. "I hate when you do this. Shawn is my best friend. He's had a long night and I wanted to make sure he's ok."
"Yeah babe, and I've had a long night too, but I don't see you holding my hand, smiling and batting your eyelashes at me!" He snaps, his face turning red with anger as he stares at Camila.
"Hello?! Earth to Mendes!" Brian slaps me on the back and I release a breath I didn't even know I was holding as I realize I'm clenching my fists so hard I could break something.
"Ahh Detective Craigen, just in time, would you please drag your buddy Shawn off my unit? He's bothering my Camila." Andy smirks with a look of victory in his eyes.
Whoa... what? "His Camila."
"Andy seriously, he's not doing anything wrong." Camila tries to say. Brian looks between Andy, Camila and me and tugs at my uniform to get me to head back towards the door.
"It's ok Mila, we should be going anyway." Brian says trying to diffuse the situation. "We still gotta head back to the station and complete a mountain of paperwork. Right Shawn?"
Camila and I sigh in unison, give each other one last understanding look, and Brian and I turn to leave the unit. I look back one last time and Camila gives me her signature gorgeous smile before I finally turn to leave.
I don't care that she's dating Andy; when she smiles at me like that I feel like the only guy in the room. She's like the sunshine that breaks up the doom and gloom and I could bask in her sunshiny glow all day, everyday.
When we get back to our undercover cruiser, Brian smirks at me "Dude you are so into her I can see the drool from over here."
"I know Bri" I say actually checking my mouth for wetness.. Even though I'm still slightly fuming from Andy's actions towards Camila; I know in my heart that she'll get tired of him one day and I'll be there to show her I can treat her better than he can.
I just don't know when that day will be.
