Casey
I arrived at Mariana's house and went inside, making my way to the kitchen. I got to the doorway to see her dancing and singing along to songs. She turned, saw me, and jumped, dropping her bowl of ingredients onto the floor.
"Don't do that," Mariana huffed, picking the bowl and stuff off the floor.
"Sorry," I said, walking over to her.
She stood up and put the bowl on the counter. "Shouldn't you be in school?" Mariana asked me.
"I should, but I needed to do something," I answered.
"What's that?" Mariana asked me.
I walked towards Mariana and hugged her. That surprised her.
"Thanks for being my mom," I whispered.
That's all it took, and Mariana hugged me back. We pulled back, and I released her.
"I'm sorry that I called you my incubator. Someone made me realize that you're more than that," I admitted.
"Casey, what's wrong? You don't seem like yourself," Mariana reasoned.
I walked over to the table and sat down in a chair. Mariana joined me.
"I grew up with two loving dads, but it's hard when you want a mom, too," I confessed.
"But it doesn't mean that you don't have one," Mariana reasoned.
"When I found out you were my biological mom, I felt angry. For years, Gavin told me that he didn't know who my biological mom was, and it wasn't important. It was for me. I watched the other kids bring their moms to school while I sat without one," I explained.
"But you didn't," Mariana told me.
"Huh?" I asked.
"I came to those events even when you didn't see me. We didn't want to confuse you, but I didn't want to miss those moments either," Mariana admitted.
"Why didn't you and my dads tell me? I would have understood," I reasoned.
"Because it's not something you drop on a child. We watched Gavin and Ty struggle to adopt. No one would give them a child. Kevin and I talked. Kevin wanted to give Gavin a chance at fatherhood because that's his best friend even if I'm not a fan of Ty," Mariana explained.
That made me chuckle.
"Casey, I knew I would have to give you up after your birth, but I knew you were going to a loving home, and I could still see you. It made it hurt a little less," Mariana added.
"I guess that I always struggled with knowing you were a part of my life, but not completely," I said.
Mariana looked at me. "Is that why you struggle with girls? Because you didn't grow up in a house with a mom and dad," Mariana questioned.
"Yeah, because I wouldn't know the first thing about what to do," I admitted.
"Oh, that's easy. You do whatever the girl wants, and you're happy. Ask Kevin," Mariana said, grinning.
I laughed. Mariana is a nut, but I couldn't imagine my life without her.
"Honey! I'm home!" Kevin yelled, walking into the kitchen. He stopped and saw me sitting there. "Does Gavin and Ty know that you're not in school?"
"It's the first day. It doesn't count," I answered. My phone rang, and I answered it.
Why are you not in school?
