Casey
Who in their right mind would let us loose in an apple orchard? I bet you're wondering how we managed to go the apple orchard since our parents grounded us. It's easy when they accompany you to it. Yep, we got babysitters. Well, a babysitter in the form of Mack.
Our parents figure if we had Mack with us, then we would stay out of trouble. Yeah, they were wrong. Have you met us? Better yet, have you met Mack?
Mack pulled into the grass at the apple orchard.
"I don't think this is a parking spot," I mentioned, looking at us parked in the middle of the orchard.
"Ask me if I care what you think?" Mack asked, looking at me through the rearview mirror.
Mack got out of the car, as did the rest of us.
"Papa, shouldn't we park and pay for apples?" Coop asked.
"Cooper Mackenzie Harrison, let me give you advice. If you can find a way not to pay for something, then you do. Why should we pay for apples that God planted trees that produce them? People take this whole pay for food too seriously," Mack told Coop.
Larissa and I walked over to Coop as Mack carried bags to trees.
"Your middle name is Mackenzie?" I questioned.
"Yeah, don't remind me. Since my parents named Andi after my dad, Papa Mack warned them he gets the next shot," Coop sighed.
"Why can't parents name their children with decent names? It's always something obscure like Telsa, Halo, or some bullshit name that you can't pronounce or spell," I mentioned.
"Because parents think their cool and forget that kids have to deal with the bullshit," Larissa reasoned. "My grandparents name my mom and her siblings' obscure names. People call my mom Lake."
"I don't think it matters what your parents name you. It matters how you make the name your own," Cody reasoned.
We looked at Cody like he was insane. How do you reason an obscure name? It's like explaining a deep dish that no one eats because you don't know the ingredients.
"Are you dipwads going to stand around all day or you picking apples?" Mack yelled.
"How did we end up with Mack as a babysitter?" I asked.
"Because you and your sweetheart can't seem to keep your stupid asses out of trouble. Dude, it's not even November, and you managed to spend most of the school year grounded," Coop retorted.
"We had good reasons," I mentioned.
"You never have a good reason," Coop reminded me.
"That's because someone drags me into their mess. Do you know Brandon almost helped me lose my innocence last year? I had Bertha chasing me in the hospital so he could see Andi," I remarked.
"That's your fault. No one told you to flirt with a middle-aged nurse who owns a billion cats," Coop retorted.
"Man, I get no love for risking my innocence," I mumbled.
It's true. I help people out and get the short end of the stick. No good deed goes unpunished. In my case, I get punished a lot.
We walked over to Mack, and he threw canvas bags at us except for Coop. With his broken arm, Mack forbid him to climb anything. That lucky dog.
Cody, Larissa, and I climbed into the trees. I threw my bag down to the ground. Who the hell can pick apples and carry a bag at the same time? Someone needs to explain the law of gravity to Mack or physics.
