Virgil nodded his head in time to his music slightly as he walked. Feeling a gentle tap on his shoulder, he turned around.

"What?" He asked a little harshly, pulling his headphones down around his neck. Roman looked at his feet, unsure of himself.

"I do trust myself." He said eventually. Virgil's laugh died in his throat when he saw the look of uncertainty on Roman's face. "I do." He mumbled, trying to convince himself more than Virgil. Virgil didn't think he'd ever seen someone so vulnerable.

"Roman," he said, shocking both himself and Roman with the the use of his real name, "I've been studying the psychology of people at our school for ages and that means I've been studying your psychology. You aren't normally like this. You don't usually talk to people outside of your little bubble and I've never seen you so insecure before. There's something on your mind and you don't have to tell me what it is but," Virgil sighed, "if you don't tell anyone, it's going to get worse."

Roman laughed slightly. "Who are you telling me this as? Teacher? Enemy?" He laughed again and Virgil subconsciously noted it down as a distraction technique in his head. He sighed, feeling as if he was going to be stupid.

"I'm telling you this as a friend."

Roman furrowed his brow, opening and closing his mouth a few times, trying to form an answer to the question Remus had asked him.

"Come on, Ro." Remus said, all the blood rushing to his head from being upside-down. "How'd it go? Gimme the details!"

Roman opened his mouth again but closed it when he found that whatever he tried to say died in his throat. Eventually, he got a sentence out.

"It went well." He said, masking the surprise in his tone.

"How though?"

"We're friends now."

Remus' face fell and he groaned, falling off the bottom bunk. "That's it?"

"It's not my fault you picked such a difficult person." Roman mumbled. "And why're you so disappointed anyway? Knowing you, I thought you'd be happy."

"I am happy." Remus said quickly, burying his face in the carpet. "This is just the most boring romcom I've ever had to watch in my life and that's saying something."

"I'm not a character in a film!" Roman protested. Remus giggled into the carpet.

"Well, your love-life is turning you into one."

Roman crossed his arms and growled, finding not sharp retort on the tip of his tongue. Remus giggled again, lifting his head out of the carpet to stare at Roman with dead green eyes. Roman rolled his eyes and turned away, hearing Remus get up and leave the room.

Roman sighed slightly and looked up at the top bunk. Something had happened that afternoon. Something he couldn't place. He'd finally seen through Virgil's false front he'd put on, even if it was only for a second, he'd seen through it. And Virgil had... cared about him to some extent. And he'd called him his friend.

Well, that was progress, at least.
